Brrrr! Cannot believe it is really June. Rained all day yesterday and high today was 53, but I really needed to get out and take some photos of gravestones. But understand that I planned my wardrobe based on it being June, as in summer, as in at least somewhat warm. HA!! Nature has played a big joke on me, and I am freezing.
Headed out to the local bakery cafe. Looked at stuff in display case and chose a quiche and some sort of curd dessert, except the lady put it in a bag thinking I was ordering it for takeout. So I told her I wanted to eat it there. So she put it on a plate, but it was cold instead of heated. I guess I was supposed to order eat-in food from the menu?? So I at a little of it, then slipped the rest into the bag where the dessert was located and took it back to the cottage to reheat it. It was really good, but I am still confused about the miscommunication. Does she charge more when something is served from the menu???
Then headed off to the church which is very close to here, but even though i had on long cotton pants, a short-sleeved shirt, a long sleeved thin cotton top on top of that, and finally, my raincoat, I was cold, especially when the wind picked up. Plus, all I brought was one pair of sandals, so my feet got soaked in the wet grass and after taking about 1/3 of the photos I needed to take, i went back to cottage to warm up. FYI, these "cottages" are stone and were originally part of a barn and later employee homes, so they have stone walls which are 2' thick!! And each room has only one electric wall heater that looks like hot water heat, per room, so it takes a long time to heat up, and they turn off every 30 minutes, so you have to keep resetting them. (Remember that it is not too long ago, a decade or so after WWII, that most homes in England even had central heating.)
Met a nice young couple in the church cemetery and found out the husband and I are no doubt distant cousins as we share some relatives. They could not stay long, but are going to contact me via my email so we can share information. We think we share a 4th great-grandmother.
So, I am trying to go along with things and not be the ugly American. I did get some ice cube trays and have been making myself iced tea, which I have really missed here. And i am trying to be polite and live with things as I am imagining the British do, and not complain. (I suspect they wear warmer clothing, like wool instead of cotton!) There are no clothing stores within about 20 miles of here, but I did go into one town that the owner said had some sporting clothing, which might include a warmer jacket, but I parked too far away and ran out of energy, plus my knee and hips are still really sore from my fall, so I gave up and went home.
I wanted to see the Gisborough Priory in Gisborough, but after walking several blocks to get there, it was closed. Will not open until Wednesday, so I will try later in the week. The priory and the town of Gisborough, by the way, was founded by the ancestors of Robert the Bruce, aka Braveheart, whose family were kings of Scotland in 1119. (Remember the movie??) Robert the Bruce or "Robert de Brus" owned land in Danby by the way and fought a major battle here.
Heading to the sea tomorrow--supposed to be a high of 59 F. Whoopee! Ought to be a souvenir store there somewhere where I can buy a sweatshirt. Wednesday is supposed to hit a whopping 64 F. but it is supposed to rain again.
