I am so fascinated with Jewel and her cubs...have to check several times a day...most of the time in live stream she is nursing and pretty still but occasionally they are in view but I check out the archives of course. I am curious, are the mothers always this good to their cubs?

I always watch their U-Tube videos. They show just the good action shots with the cubs. I am amazed that Mom doesn't squash the cubs when she moves around! They are so tiny and she is so big! The one cub seems so much more vocal than the other one, always screaming for something.
Lily was a very good mom too (up until she abandoned Hope later on, anyways , but that was related to hormones, and we all know how crazy we women get when our hormones are in control! )
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Who knows if it was hormones. I believe she was trying to protect her baby. Male bears will kill the young in order to get the female adults to mate. Males have no sense of caring for the babies. The Mom's usually try to avoid the males, but there's a chance that she saw avoidance wasn't working and did what she thought would work - by abandoning Hope - to try to keep her alive.
Mom bears (and most Mom animals) will do anything to protect their young. In Alaska we were constantly told to never ever get near a mom and her young - whether bears or moose - either one would attack if they thought the young were threatened.
A few years ago I watched some workers trying to trim trees. One had a nest in it. The mama bird was attacking the worker - he almost lost an eye and was scratched up - before they gave up on that tree. They talked about getting a gun - but some of us told them we'd help them use it, but not on the bird - that the tree could wait.
