How cold is too cold

How cold is too cold

Postby Redetotry » Wed Nov 09, 2011 10:06 am

Since I found heated indoor storage for my RV I didn't have it winterized. It is supposed to be sunny & in the 50's & but down to 29 degrees tomorrow night and I'm wondering if I should take her to the storage place now, my contract starts the 15th but they said i could start earlier if needed. After tomorrow night it is supposed to warm back up to 40's & 50's at night.

I don't think one night will have any effect, but if you want to cover your bases, try leaving the under the sink cabinet doors open and run a source of heat, like an electric heater. That's what I did until Josh could come and winterize my rig.

I never have winterized my rigs but if there is a freeze predicted I run a heater and open the cabinet doors under the sink, where the water tank is and in the bathroom. I don't know at what temperature it might freeze the pipes. We are so far South that we seldom have 2 nights or more of freezing weather in a row.

The inside shouldn't get anywhere too cold if the temp outside gets to 29 for a short time one night. If it's going to maintain below freezing temps, then you need to worry. But even if you don't run heat for this one night, you can open cabinet doors - as that will keep the temps for the pipes closer to the outside walls warmer.

I'm always amazed at how much colder it is inside my rig (parked in the undercover storage space), compared to the outside temps. After Josh winterized my rig and unplugged the electric heater I had running, I stopped by to check on things, and it was so much colder inside! I can see how easily the pipes could freeze up. I think I'll put a thermometer in it so I can see just how cold it does get. Would be interesting to find out.

BJ, when I was a young working lady, they used to tell us that the water on the highway would freeze at between 28 and 29 degrees if that temperature held for more than 3 hours. If it was 30 degrees the bridges and underpasses would most likely glaze.

So what is too cold? Well for me it is about 60*. As a full timer, for my rig...if I know it is going to be 28 or below I unhook the hose to the rig and drain the hose water, open kitchen and bathroom cabinet lower doors. I do have furnace set to come on at 50-55 or 60*. This winter I plan to provide some insulation to the outside shower (probably newspaper). Having said all that...just spent 2 nights at Lost Maples State Park and one of my thermometers said it got down to 24 while the other one said it was only 28*. Either way didn't matter as I had reason to flush the water line several times during the night so nothing froze in the water hose. The furnace did kick on one night; had a heater running during the night, no frozen hoses or lines.

And none of need to ask the reason :)
