Question for the Dog People

I don't know much about dog anatomy but our border collie has a sore on what I would call his elbow. I had him in for a teeth cleaning about a week ago and the staff forgot to tell the vet to look at the sore. He kind of looked at it when I went to pick him up and gave me a round of Cephalexin to give him. We have been spraying it with Vetericyn which is a wound treatment we use on the horse. I was wondering if there was a cream or something we could put on it.

I'd keep it as clean as possible, Martha, and probably try to keep it dry. If the dog is fussing at it you might have problems. Hopefully it isn't too bothersome and your dog will leave it alone & let it heal. Jed, on the other hand, would worry it to death & I'd end up putting him in a cone collar. Good luck!

Thanks Laura, I didn't think about putting a cone on him. Will have to get one. I'll try the Neosporin. I keep washing his mat and putting it in the house and he keeps dragging it out.

I had wonderful results with Molly's hot spots and itchies when we were in FL with Vetericyn. However, I had to make sure she wasn't constantly licking and irritating the worst of the spots after I sprayed them. An Elizabethan collar works wonders on places that dogs can constantly lick! Vetericyn worked so well that I bought two extra bottles before I left FL in case I couldn't get it up here in the Adirondacks. I love the stuff!

Soos, my DH loves Vetericyn. Don't complain about a cut or a sore or you will get sprayed. He saw it advertised on RFD TV and we ordered some on the internet. Now some of the farm supply stores carry it.

i would say have the vet check out the sore before applying any kind of medication even if its topical .... some meds will work, but you want to be sure to be applying the right one.....
