Getting towed

Anyone here ever have their motorhome towed? Well its a new experience for me today. Left Friday afternoon for a weekend camping with my sister and on the way here the bearings went on the front passenger wheel! Luckily we made it to the campground but I'm now awaiting charlies crane service to come tow it to freightliner of Baltimore because that is the closest freightliner to where I am. I had a local mechanic stop by on Sunday, James with all about rvs. He was very nice, didn't charge me but confirmed it was bearing oil that was all over my tire. Not brake fluid like I had suspected.

Anyway Im waiting for the tow company to arrive and thanking the heavens that I didn't lose a wheel on the way here!!! I'll try to take pictures and let you know how it goes.

Paulette, we were towed in our previous motorhome a few years ago. The tow truck driver told us that if he had towed us much further (he towed us maybe 5 miles), that he would have had to disconnect the universal joint from the rod, because they could have been damaged during the tow. We had a bearing problem at one time as well but ours was fixed at the campground we were staying in. I wish you the best and hope you will be back on the road soon.

I"m sorry you had to experience that; sure put a damper on your fun plans. I wanted to know if you had a "forewarning" sound the last few times you had driven it; bad bearings usually give a "whine" or "dull rythmic sound" for a while prior to the actual failure. They are packed in grease so why was their oil on the wheel?

I always hated it when my autos made strange noises because when I took them in to be checked, I had to describe or imitate the noise. The repair person (always a guy) would listen to me and then tell me he had no idea what I was describing and we should go for a ride. You know the car would not make the sounds while he was in the car with me. Invariably they would tell me they drove the car for miles without hearing anything and therefore nothing was wrong. As soon as I picked it up....the noise returned. I often wondered if repair people are hard of hearing?

I don't know if repair men are hard of hearing or they just think women don't know what they are talking about. I brought my motorhome in for service a few years ago and ask them to check the brakes, they just didn't feel right to me. When I picked it up I was told they couldn't find anything wrong with the brakes. I drove it about 20 miles and had to brake hard when someone pulled out in front of me and the brakes on 3 wheels locked up. I was not happy with that bunch. They supposedly fixed the brakes and about a year later I had another problem on one of the wheels they fixed and they had some part in wrong.

Around here most of the dealers won't work on motorhomes at all. One of the Ford dealers built a new truck repair shop and they will work on my motorhome because it is only 23'. If it was longer they wouldn't work on it. The RV places won't work on engine repairs. If you don't know a good shop you are up the creek.

Nope. No warning sound. There was a smell, but gd and i thought it was one of the big trucks in front of us on the highway. These bearings are packed in a very thick 90 weight oil, not grease. I have pictures of it being hooked up to be towed. Whenever i get them downloaded ill post a few The tow driver was great, knew exactly what he was doing. Had to drop the drive shaft too. So, it is now at freight liner and I hope to hear from them soon. This was definitely a new experience for me and one I hope to never go through again.

I have such a fear of problems I have AAA plus and insurance for maintenance. I might be spending too much but it's peace of mind. Yesterday I spent an hour on the phone trying to find a shop to change my transmission oil, not a place in my hometown, will take it 35 miles to another town tomorrow. It has been showing a 'check engine' light too and Camping World didn't handle that either. Now to find a good RV mechanic. I have a trip planned the last of the month. It might take me the entire time to get it ready to go

When I had my right rear brake lock up I had to be put on a flatbed truck. I thought the smell was the road being repaired. Luckily I stopped at a rest stop. Smoke was pouring out. A young man came over and asked if I had a fire extinguisher. That wasn't needed. But I had to buy 2 new tires. They were worn so low that I couldn't be towed. The funny part was that I was towed to the parking lot of the tire place. I thought should I sleep in the MH or go to the motel almost next door. It was a pet friendly motel. So dumb me, I went for the motel. I was in Nevada and I swear that this motel was a brothel. Doors opening and closing all night long, which had Sammie really upset. I laugh about it now.
