On the Way Home

Well the GTG at Port Lavaca is officially over. Birdie and I went on to Galveston Island State Park (which I fell in love with) for several days. My friend Carole had spent some time with us in Port Lavaca but had to go back for her chemo treatment on Friday joined us again in Galveston since she's only a few miles away.

Carole and I did a tour of the old victorian houses, many of them painted as Painted Ladies in old Galveston. Wow, I'll post some pictures when I get them downloaded to Photobucket. I had a great time but was kind of distracted with the "possible" sale of my house and Sassy is not doing well. She's just not the Sassy I've known and she is having great difficulty getting up and down the stairs into the Rv and if you try to give her a boost, she bares her teeth and snarls which is totally not like her. She's twelve and I know the time is getting near to send her to the Rainbow Bridge. I will take her to her vet as soon as we get home. Sometimes you look at her and she's just not "in there" and I suspect she's had one or more strokes. I know this is something I have to do FOR her no matter how hard it might be for me.

Poor, poor Sassy. Tips was like that - refused to let me help him when he was having trouble on steps etc towards the end. My heart goes out to you and your Sassy.

I'm glad, though, that even with that happening you were able to enjoy more time with Carole. I know how much you've been missing spending time with her. Galveston is a neat area and I'm looking forward to your pictures.

Awww, I'm sorry to hear about Sassy, Karen. Would it help to use a towel under her belly to get her into the RV? Maybe not having you help her with your arms might be easier on both of you.

When I had to put a cat down I asked the vet how he did it. He said that it's one on the hardest things he does, but also one of the most important. I've had to put 3 pets down since then and always think of that whenever I hear of people in that terrible position.

I'll be praying for you & the decisions you'll be making.

Thinking of you and your journey home.....Keeping Sassy in your thoughts. It is the commitment we make to them when we bring them into our hearts and homes...but it is never easy to let go.

Karen, I'm glad Carole is feeling well enough to go exploring with you and got to spend time with Birdie and all the other ladies at PL.

So sorry about Sassy not doing good. My Remi is getting to be really slow getting up and moving seems to hurt him, then there's times he runs and barks at all the smells out in the yard. I know whatever you have to do it will be done out of love.

Karen - Poor little Sassy - sure is not like her sweet self when she snarls at you. It's so sad when they hurt and we don't know where or what.
Take care,

Karen, how well I know the agony of making that last decision for our loved four-footers. We go back and forth and back and forth, until we come to the day when we just know it's the right thing to do. I know when it comes when I realize I am just being selfish in wanting just one more hug and one more lick, when the poor little four-footer just wants relief from pain. I'm not sure if the having to make these decisions over our lives with pets makes us stronger, or just keeps getting harder and harder to do as we, ourselves, age. But I know it will never deter me from always having a furry head next to me, until the day comes when I will wish someone would mercifully give me a final shot to oblivion.

At any rate, enjoy Sassy as much as you can while she is still with you. I look at Molly each day as if it could be her last with me, because I know (at least I HOPE) I will be here after she is a memory.

Glad you and Carole could have some good time together! She must be tolerating the chemo sessions quite well to be able to walk around with you. Let's hope those sessions are fighting a winning battle!

Keeping my fingers crossed on the "possible" sale of your house. Hope that goes well for you.

Gentle pats for Sassy and hugs for you. That's a difficult decision to make, but you'll know if it's time.

So glad you were able to have an extended gtg at Galveston Is. SP. I'd like to go back there with my kayak.

Aw, sorry to hear that Sassy is not feeling better. Can't wait to see pics of G Island and to hear about why it's your new favorite! Safe drive home.

Awww, poor Sassy! Maybe it hurts her backside when you try to boost her in...she could have arthritis or hip dysplasia there. Drive safe if you're not home yet and hugs to you and all the furbabies. Glad to see Carole is able to still travel a bit and sightsee with you. She's such a sweet lady. Take care, MF.

So sorry to hear about your Sassy. I had to go through that last summer with my Sandy. She would space out for awhile and then run around like an "older" puppy at other times, totally being like her usual self. Sassy has had a great life with you and you will know when it is the right time. My thoughts are with you and Sassy. Lida

Karen so sorry to hear about Sassy. Hope the vet is able to help you in any way possible with whatever decisions you need to make.

Also glad you got more time with Carole and Birdie. I love to look at old homes or big ones.

Be safe as you drive back to Kerrville.

On another note, do you know of a good ophthamologist in the area? for that matter any of you in the San Antonio/Kerrville area?

Thanks.
