Dog Fest in Cincinnati

Postby BirdbyBird » Sun Jun 13, 2010 8:29 pm

Herschel here. She took us to the Dog Fest today. It was hot. It was humid. We survived. As usual is likes to rain on Dog Fest weekends and that big open field surrounded by vendor, rescue and organizations tents become a large mud and water marsh. :? Apparently the tents originally were lined up around the edges of the large field with the food booth, dock diving and some other demo areas in the middle. Well, after the mud fest of yesterday, the powers that be moved 99% of the booth along both sides of a narrow gravel road along one side of the field. It made us feel like we were walking down a guantlet of ??? Well as you can imagine, Remi was not a fan of walking that close to all the people and other dogs. We had planned to leave him behind because we thought that he wouldn't be too comfortable and well three dogs ARE a lot to walk in a controlled area. But Remi ran to the door when he saw me get my leash and that was all it took. He doesn't ASK for stuff often being a shy one, so he wwent with Izzy and I. She did pick him up when we realized that he was going to have a tiny heart attack having to walk in those tight spaces. Izzy didn't help much. SHe kept walking over him in her excitement to see (and smell) everything.

We didn't stop to shop much. Mostly we just tried to book through and find the two booths we were hunting for: the kennel club's booth turned out to be only one booth away from my forever friends at the Golden Retriever Rescue booth. Here I am visiting with other rescued red/golden dogs. These people are always the best.

There were about 8-9 of us just hanging out around the booth. We were trying to tell people, adopt our friends. :) Well that or collecting back rubs.

We also sat at the kennel club booth for a little while. Our booth was at the end of the row so luckily there were no booths across from us. If there had been I don't think we would have stayed. Remi didn't mind just sittin' round the booth visiting. That was not as scary for him. Will have to say that she didn't get too many pictures today. Something about trying to walk with three dogs on leashes cuts down on her dexterity.

Herschel wants to know if Abby ever wears stuff like this? :?

We watched the "dock diving" a while but don't expect the action shot of the dog in mid air. Did I mention the difficulty watching for the pools of standing water. Remi is not a fan of standing water.

She took these guys pictures just because...she always liked deerhounds....

Here is a whole park of them coming in for water.

The other fun thing that I liked is that we found my favorite animal communicator. I instantly curled up on her blanket(she always sits on the ground when she "meets" us) and I told her that I was the leader of the group and had important work that I did. She just smiled and laughed when I rolled over because I "knew" she needed to scratch my belly. She agreed that Remi thought he didn't belong there and was frightened. She also said that he had a kind and gentle spirit and she thought he would probably never hurt anything on purpose. Apparently Izzy didn't talk to her much. But then again it was Izzy. She often is so busy checking things out she didn't notice that Remi and I were meeting and greeting a special person. I could have sat on her blanket all afternoon, she was just that sort of person that animals appreciate. I had a big smile on my face.

(Editor's note: She said that Herschel didn't think either Izzy or Remi were too bright. She said that Herschel thought Izzy didn't listen or follow directions very well. And that he just thought Remi was not too bright. I shared that because Remi was so shy, he often didn't show what he new.

Herschel, I'm glad you had a good day with Remi, Izzy and your hooman! I know you really like that communicator lady, but I think she didn't take the time to know the real Remi or Izzy, either that or you figured out that if she thought they weren't too bright, you might get the most belly rubs. And I'll bet since Abby knows how much you liked that cute little outfit, she'll show up in one when we all get to AR just to show off in front of Maggie!

Dear Herschel,

I love you very much.

My Mom tried to put an outfit on me ONCE...just ONCE. So, you will love me for my natural beauty and occasional sparkling personality.

Love,
Abby

PS: "SHE" certainly is good to you all!

Love it - And Peaches reports she doesn't want any of those clothes - she's too much of a tomboy :)

Looks like everyone had a good day - including Remi - when he didn't have to walk among all those skeery peeeples.

Very cute and looks like a lot of fun. Reminded me of our Walk For Animals. They had a long row of booths there too which got very crowded with people and dogs. Moxy got very antsy there with so much going on! The dogs sure love it! Hershel, you are a great communicator!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

hi there Hershel, this is Gracie, I remember once when my hooman took me to a
dog fest, I was a pogo stick the whole day, but my little friend Shasta walked so
nice, I think she was bored but I was just too excited to stand on all 4's for very
long. But I'll tell you, I could just not pee in public for anything in the world and
when we were on our way home I cried and cried cause I had to pee so bad. Was
so glad to finally get home and be able to pee on my own grass. I just don't like
strange grass. Glad you had fun, and just give Remi and Izzy a break, they will
eventually learn.

I always enjoy listening to what Donetta shares.....It makes me think how an animal, in this case Herschel, might view behavior differently than us humans do. Another reason I enjoyed "Animals in Translation" by Temple Grandin. Herschel doesn't necessarily understand that the younger dog (Izzy) is still perhaps learning the ways of the world and what is expected of her behavior wise...he just knows that she doesn't have it together at this point in time. And compared to him she does not know how to follow directions. And he probably doesn't spend much time contemplating how Remi's neglectful experiences of early childhood effect how he percieves the world as such a scary and not to be trusted place. He may just notice that Remi responds differently to environments and is frightened by things that Herschel sees or "knows" to be not frightening.
