OK, I thought by know I knew all of the things to keep away from pets - but I didn't know about Avocados.

Be aware - this is a list of foods - doesn't include lots of other things (like Tylenol for example).

Wow, did not know about avacados and I would not DELIBERATELY feed my dogs raw meat. That list is a really good reason not to feed your pets table food. Thanks, Beth for the heads up..

I don't think its the avocado itself, just the seed. Avoderm is a dog food made with
avocado and I fed my dogs that for a couple years, they loved it and they were so
shiny. But then my budget took a dive.

Avocado
The leaves, fruit, seeds and bark of avocados contain Persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in
dogs. Birds and rodents are especially sensitive to avocado poisoning, and can develop congestion,
difficulty breathing and fluid accumulation around the heart. Some ingestions may even be fatal.


It would make me leery of the pet food with avocado in it. But they probably have so little it doesn't have effect. Just my guess. Or how they add it, maybe.

I found the garlic reference interesting also since I know that there are several health food additives used for dogs based on garlic. I have never used then but there are some used as tick and flea protection???????

Guess Chewy was lucky that time she filched an avacado off of the kitchen counter, she didn't even get the poopy's, which is unusual, seems everything gives her the runs. But she only ate about a quarter of it...but then again she's not very big...er..tall. She eats a variety of fruits and veggies, but chicken just tears her up.

I learned about garlic years ago - and I know they make lots of things with garlic for dogs. Mine loved them. One of mine also was eating all the onions out of the garden. Very lucky he didn't get sick on them.

I wonder if how they cook some of it makes a difference, or the amounts they use? But I do know I feel better keeping these items away from Peaches rather than taking chances.

I had an aunt when growing up who had a dog that needed meds several times a day. She gave the dog the meds in a piece of chocolate. I wonder now if the chocolate was the reason the dog needed the meds?

Some of these things I did not know. I would never have guessed the macademia nuts because dogs can have peanut butter. Sigh. I hope I never make a fatal mistake.

I remember one job I had where the company gave out mistletoe to all the employees before Christmas. Then, a couple weeks later, we found out that several of the employees cats died because they had eaten the berries on the mistletoe, which are extremely toxic to animals. Apparently, cats think they are yummy.

When I first got ferrets, I heard that ferrets LOVE raisins and that lots of people gave their ferrets raisins for treats. Later, it turned out that raisins cause liver damage in ferrets and can be fatal. Luckily, none of my ferrets ever liked raisins so I gave up trying to use them for treats.

When I share my chocolate chip cookies with my ferrets, they only get the cookie part w/o the chips. They don't seem to mind

I've been feeding Avoderm for over a year and my dogs like it and so far so good. My little ones also like raw Avocado and share small bites of mine several times a week. I've also had dogs steal my birthday chocolate candy and eat it all with no trouble. Makes you wonder about these lists sometimes or if in the last few years chocolate has changed.

When I was at the vet a couple weeks ago with Peaches, someone rushed in a dog in distress - it had just eaten chocolate. So, yes, it is a problem. As to things like garlic treats and that avocado dog food - I'm guessing it's how the products are treated. I wouldn't give straight avocado. That's me. Especially now when I think back to my aunt's dog and really do believe it was getting pills because of the chocolate it got the pills in.

Also have given my pups Avoderm for 2-1/2 years and it seems to work for them.
