I would think all the structure and expectations that you are asking of Chewy will help. If, as you have thought, many of the behaviors are from fear and anxiety, being very clear on rules and what TO DO really help a dog calm down and feel safer in his/her world. They don't have to be responsible (OMG) about deciding what to do but can more confidently follow your expectations. Soon enough you will be able to give Chewy hugs again!

OMG! I couldn't believe it this morning! The garage door guy came this morning and normal scenario would be me trying to talk to him while Chewy barked hysterically with me also yelling at her to knock it off, Chewy quit, Chewy enough.....When we went outside, Chewy attached to me by her umbilicle cord (read leash), she started barking, I turned to her, snapped my fingers at her, told her chttt, and made her sit. Had to do it twice, but I was very calm and continued talking to the guy, and by golly she shut right up! Then every time I had to go out to talk to the guy, she was wary of him but very calm. He even stepped over her once, said 'scuse me little dog and she didn't even shy away from him. I'm so proud of her! That is a HUGE step for her!! I almost had to sit on my hands to keep from reaching down to pet her and tell her what a good girl she was, but I maintained.....so guess I'm proud of me too! I'm finding that the absolutely hardest part of this training is the no affection.....I really miss hugging her and having her sit on my lap in the evenings when I watch tv. sigh.

Echo, just remember that Chewy is probably not feeling neglected or unloved by the absence of hugs.....it is us humans that miss the hugs. As humans we have to relearn some ways that our beloveds demonstrate affection back to us....

Sharon, I'm loving this post. I can't wait to read updates. All the comments could be attached to my Sedona too. Been thinking that she needs additional training because something isn't working. She is shy but snaps at other dogs and sometimes people. I've got to get control of it as it doesn't make for a good co-pilot when I can't take her everywhere.

Jennifer assured me that we will. She just has to earn all of the good stuff back by leaving the bad stuff behind. So it's actually up to Chewy, and my perseverance as pack leader as to how long it is before she can move back into the bed. I'm sure that the loves will be much sooner.

When the ferrets do something naughty (which happens a lot!), I tell them I am going to punish them with hugs and kisses (which I do a lot!)
They are just doing what ferrets do best (getting into things) and that is what I love about them even if it makes a mess. It also makes me laugh (even while I am cleaning up the mess)! I wouldn't have it any other way
