Jed's Bloodwork Results

Well, I got the bloodwork results back and everything that was out of whack 2 weeks ago is now normal. That makes me happy. His electrolytes and liver enzymes were both off right after the poisoning, but now all look good.

His phenobarb levels are at the high end of the range (36 out of 45). That's NOT bad, but it gives us wiggle room to bring down his dosage and hopefully elminate the ataxia (back feet dragging) while still providing some sort of safety cushion to hopefully prevent further seizures. It's not an exact science, and the neurologist wants to play it as safe as possible so I don't end up with a dog that has seizures for the rest of his life.

So ... we're going to play a bit with his meds and see how he goes for the next week. This time next week we'll decide what we're going to do for the next 6 months -- or forever. Keep your fingers crossed that all goes well for my boy.

this is GOOD news, and as he heals even more and the phenobarb comes down a little
and hopefully, eventually, he will be off of it. Fingers crossed and Bandit and the girls
have their paws crossed as well, and a few prayers will certainly help.

I have seen the effects of phenobarb in kids......it isn't nice either...... hope you are able to ease him off slowly over time......

That's the plan, Tina, provided he has no more seizures. The neurologist's thinking is that the longer he's on it the less likely he is to have a seizure. That's why we're both hoping the lower dosage will eliminate the foot dragging but give him protection for about 6 months. Then we'll start taking him off of it slowly.

Sounding good for Jed, Laura! That he has survived at all has never ceased to amaze me. That kind of poison is so often fatal, especially if a doctor doesn't know how to treat it.

Hugs and kisses to Jed (and hugs to you, too). So glad he's doing better. How are you doing with the insurance company? Sometimes it takes the "mention" of an attorney to get them moving. You might "mention" all your stress with your heart condition to them. And keep calling them - the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Great news. Both Tips and Moxie were on seizure meds at times - and we were always playing with the dosages. But I was glad to play with those to have them the extra years. Hopefully you'll be able to maintain Jed on a fairly low dosage. I'm so glad he's responded so well to all the treatments - from your first posts, I was scared as He ... - and not nearly as scared as I know you were.
