They may have different regulations in different states but here in Ohio, Assisted Living Residential Arrangements are very different than nursing homes. Assisted Living facilities have specific standards and levels of independence required and levels of assistance that can be offered. My cousin, who is only a year older than I am and who had polio in the early 50's, made the decision just last year along with her husband to go into an assisted living facility. She had undergone shoulder surgery a couple years go on her good arm that was unsuccessful and left her with limited range of motion. Her left arm is affected by the polio. As long as her husband remains healthy she can continue assisting her as he always has on many of those life chores that depend on two healthy arms and hands but this way, neither of them have to cook if they don't want to and when/if something should happen to her husband, she is already in a setting that can step in and provide that "assistance" that she would need to remain independent.
