Thursday October 6, 2022 in Rome

When you see this post we will have completed most of Thursday already here in Rome. We had a great day today on a guided walking tour of the Vatican that included the museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. I took lots of pictures and have included some here.
Image
This was at the start of our tour and we were anxious to see as much in the Vatican as they would allow.

These are just a few of the stunning
artwork we saw in the museums.

This is the vaulted ceiling in a section called the Gallery of Maps that contains many painted topographical maps.
Image
This is the largest wall hanging in the Gallery of Tapestries and is called “The Transformation of Christ.” It has a stunning feature where Christ’s eyes appear to follow the viewer as the viewer walks from one end (area) of the tapestry to another.

And finally, the masterpiece that both my daughter and I wanted to see the most but almost missed - “The Pietà” by Michaelangelo. When we arrived at the Basilica the area was blocked off by curtains. We were disappointed - but not for long. After viewing the rest of the Basilica and on our way toward the exit, we saw the curtains had been withdrawn. “The Pietà” was there and available for viewing in all its glory.

Tonight we’re going on a golf cart tour of the sights around the city.

Great to see those wonderful pictures. Like a blast from the past long long ago for me. I was much younger when I was there and not so into all the places I wish I would have spent more time visiting. Looks like you are having a great time.

Wonderful photos, Sandi! Realized I was there about this time 3 years ago. Also just read a U.S. tourist threw 2 sculptures to the floor breaking them Wednesday! He was upset he couldn't see the Pope!

Nice photos, and it looks like you are having fun! Hope it is not too hot there.

The golf cart trip sounds fun, but have you eaten any really good food yet??

It just amazes me how intricate and detailed the art and architecture was all those centuries ago, and all done painstakingly by hand! :o So beautiful!
