A Summers Day Walk

Thought I would take you on one of the walks the dog’s and I do every day or every other day, depending on where we decide to go. This walk is about 2 1/2 miles round trip. It’s a nice walk around Heart Lake and at one point goes between Heart and Fawn Lakes. Shady for 95 percent of it.

We start out from home and take the path between my subs Road and Heart Lake road. Then we start our big walk.


This part is the beginning that goes between Fawn and Heart Lakes


This is Fawn Lake which is across the road from my house. I can’t see the lake as there is a lagoon running off from it and that is across the road from me. But I can see a bit of that.


This is Heart Lake. It is the 7th deepest lake in the state and was the lake we had a cottage/summer home on for 20 years.


Our walk takes us past the public access site in Heart Lake where I took the picture. It’s the half way point, a favorite spot for the dogs to stop for a drink and then we follow the road on around the other side


Then we have a short jaunt alongside the Highway here before picking up Heart Lake road back to the path and home. There is a bike/hiking trail next to the highway on the other side of the road. Some times we walk that, but today we stayed on the grassy part of the shoulder. That bike/hiking trail runs for 75 miles to Mackinaw City. It’s part of the Iron Belle trail which starts in Detroit and will run all the way to the end of the western part of the UP when finished. It connects with some other trails and will be the longest contagious trail in the country when completed, at over 2,000 miles. During the winter it is a snowmobile trail.

You are very blessed to have a place to walk as lovely as this. For the first ten years I lived in my current home I would take nightly walks around my neighborhood (about 40 minutes). As time went by, there seemed to be more and more loose dogs around, even though I was walking after dark.

Last October I had a large, loose dog totally knock me down flat on the ground, even though I always carried a stick and got in a good whack before I went down. I thought at the time I had hit my head, but I had not. Luckily it was a cold night, I had on long pants and a heavy jacket, gloves and a hat. I wasn't even scraped anywhere.

But this final insult caused me to decide to stop walking around the neighborhood. It was a very scary and hard fall; at my age, had I hit my head on the pavement in such a fall. . .

I have a large-ish back yard, I now just try to do 30 laps around the yard every day.

And so it goes.

I am so happy for you, Sue, in your walking abilities and choices.

Yes Shelia, Heart Lake is named because it is sort of shaped,Ike a Heart. Here is an aerial picture of Heart Lake (top) and Fawn Lake (bottom)
It’s hard to see, but in the lower right hand corner, pyou can barely make out a little strip of black coming off the road. That is my driveway and the trees to the left of it just before the curve is part of my yard. I do not know who took this picture, but somebody had posted it on Facebook as they were up flying around.

Beautiful! Back in MN there were roads and trails near where I grew up and other places around the lake that look like that. If it weren't for the harsh winters, I would consider going back there. I do miss the summers there and the lake. You are fortunate to have the green trees and lakes around you.
