Mackinac Bridge and the Spring thaw

All of us at one time or another cross bridges. Some long, some short, some high, some low. But this is something unique to Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge in spring when the weather starts to warm up. It can cause a lot of frustration for anybody who is trying to get home from working on the other side of the straits or just traveling to one side or another, although those who commute back and forth on a daily basis, know this, snow, storms and wind cam alter their commutes. Sometimes requires a long wait or even an overnight stay. Many people don’t even think about this.

And many of us in Michigan remember the Yugo that got blown off the bridge in 1989.

That’s because she was not only driving in windy conditions, she was going way too fast, exceeding the speed limit. That was one of only two vehicles ever to go off the bridge, of the 150 million vehicles that have gone over since it opened in 1957.
