Anne, I do that all the time with my eggs since I don't use them very often. I just drop each one in a small cup of water and see if it sinks or floats. If they don't stay at the bottom, they get tossed out.

That's how I check eggs also. Mine rarely get used by the date on the cartons. If I'm getting nervous and they don't float, I hard boil and make egg salad to use them up.

there is a difference between floating and bopping up though... rarely have had one float but once I did totally different eggs really have a longer life than what is on the carton
