I’m not on Facebook and don’t want to be but I don’t understand how it works. Can some one explain. The apartment complex has a Facebook page that I never joined. I always thought my mouth would get me in trouble

Where we live in a manufactured home over 55 community they also have a facebook page, in fact a couple of them one for general stuff and one for all the different activities when and where they will be. I joined all three. Oh, they also have a garage sale page. I just read, never respond. The activities one I like, all kinds of classes and events go on here. The garage sale you can list things you want to get rid of - for a price or free. Believe me if they are free - you barely hit enter and some one is at your doorstep to get it. The general one is a blast. There is a click here who complain and fuss about everything - from fast drivers to size of dogs. It is always good for a laugh. But boy can they get mean. Still interesting to read. Lots of time it has good information on it too. But it might be worth you joining if they list activities events etd. Just don't get involved in the bickering.

We also have a community FB page. Mostly updates about the park, activities, things for sale, photos, funny posts, etc. It is well moderated, so no politics, religion or nastiness allowed. Lately, it has been flooded with posts about neighbors who have been injured, sick or who have passed away. :(

You first need to join FB and then you just go the main page, look up your community name in the search area and it will take you there. You will probably have to sign up for that group too, with a password and/or request to be accepted to the group, as I am sure it is a private group only.

I didn't get on FB for years and finally, my friends convinced me that I had to join. I went on there kicking and screaming! But now I spend a lot (way too much!) time on there every day. It is a good way to keep in touch with family and friends, current events, funny posts, etc. I no longer post the political stuff now, but mostly cute stories or photos of animals, funny stuff, and just keep it light and fun. There are different groups you can join as well. I am on RV, cat, otter, wildlife, gourd, CA photography, Ghost towns, etc, groups on there. There is pretty much a group (or several) on there for any interests you can think of!

I have gotten in touch with old friends I haven't seen or heard from in decades! I recently joined a group from the lake area in MN where I grew up and have seen several people on there from my old neighborhood and from school. It is fun to keep up with everything that is going on back there.

Well........yours is a good question. You will find many of the folks that used to post here regularly back a few years ago, still posting over on Facebook. It has its strengths and detractors. Best to try it out and see how useful it is to you. We all have different things that interest us and want to engage with others in different ways. For example, many of my classmates from high school friended me. I accepted but soon found myself clicking "unfollow" so that their posts do not come up unless I look them up but if they want to read about my travels, or kayaking or dog shows they are free to. I worked on publications in high school so many students knew who I was but I did not run in a large crowd. Most of them were not that interested in me back then so I leave it like that.

There are some good groups that some people might find helpful. You can pick and choose and unfollow at will. after you get a feel for them. I like it best for keeping in touch with family, nieces, nephews, cousins and their children. Another segment is dog show folks I know spread across the country. Regarding getting "cute" forwarded posts, I found that if I take time to block the source of the original post, I don't have to see it come back up because seven other people thought it was also "uniquely" cute. I have learned to limit my "sharing" unless something really its me as novel. Neither of my children post very often, though my son does more because of his Photography business. Both of them would disown me if I ever posted one of the sugary, "I have the best daughter in the world" memes. Some posts are Facebook versions of a chain letter. Copy and repost if you care, blah, blah, blah....I know only ?x % of you will and I know who you are. Will if you already know who why litter up my in box with this "drama." We either care or we don't care but many of us won't play those games on FB. I also see people sharing some pretty personal stuff on Facebook that make me go, wow! I know that our forum isn't private but it does feel more like sharing in a campfire or around the kitchen table than not in a 400+ seat auditorium. The ones that make me twitch are the ones that just hint that some thing terrible has happened but don't mention what...... if you don't feel comfortable to share with everyone, just call or message a friend or the people that you do want to share with.....

I think I have rambled on enough from this particular soap box. I recommend you try it. Explore how you want to use it. Make it work for you. I know in the past few weeks Liz and I have had multiple Memories come up of past RV trips with pictures that tug at our hearts. Several are from some of those early GTGs out in PA with Lori and/or Beth and had pictures with you in them. It is a lot easier to post pictures on Facebook which is why you don't see many getting posted as often on the forum......

Let us know what you decide. Once you find someone like Beth of Liz you can usually go down their friend list a recognize the names of other forum member to reach out to and off you go. Just try not to become a lurker here and forget to post.....

Thanks for the replies. Had feed back from daughters too. I’ve decided I am not interested in Facebook. Thought that a long time ago when I was smarter than I am now and it still holds true. At my age my circle of friends and relatives has diminished. Us old timers keep in touch with email, snail mail and landlines. I keep in touch with family by texting and landline if I do not answer text immediately. Lol love this site and feel everyone is extended family. Sometimes my brain goes in twenty different directions as it is so do not need more distractions .

I like Facebook very much. But like most of you I dont engage in politics etc. I love seeing what some of my friends are doing and what is going on in their lives. New babies, weddings, GTG's. I have one friend who moved from Austin to Albuquerque on a farm. Love her pics of her baby goat twins that were born and all her chickens and donkeys LOL
I never copy and paste for any cause, ie: cancer, mental illness, etc. I dont wish any of my family in heaven any greetings, celebrations etc. But many do and that works for them.
I like keeping track of the fires, and what the police in my area are doing and who they are chasing LOL I like our local Rants and Raves group. Finding out who are good resources for any work I need done, either at my home or for my car etc. Good restaurant recommendations. Pretty much anything you think you might need at some point. I also have several games I play on Facebook with others or alone. Tina is right it is so easy to post pics on there and more labor intensive here ha ha I read about gardening groups I have joined. I join lots of groups and if they dont suit my needs I just leave that group. I love One Dish Cooking. That is also just on the web. Air fryer groups share what they have made and what worked out best. So it just depends what you are interested in. I too often spend too much time on Facebook but hey I usually have lots of time when I am done doing my daily chores.

The best way I could keep track of the fire here recently was on a FB page of the county the fire was in. They updated it regularly.

Shirl, I prefer this group to FB, but I use it to keep family updated on where I am, etc. And I can spend way too much time on there. With my cold, that's not a bad thing, but other times it is. If you change your mind and ever join, just remember you have total control of what you use it for.

Barbie I live in Douglas County so I belong to Douglas County Scanner Police/Fire EMS group,
Douglas County Oregon Live, Southern Oregon Scanner, Rants and Raves Douglas County, Inform Me Douglas County. I still belong to all the Jackson County groups (my old home). I also belong to Siskiyou County groups in northern California as they have great weather reports for fires and weather issues. Especially relating to the Siskiyou pass. Lots of pics of the current fires like the one yesterday north of Redding. Some awesome pics of the fire and the planes fighting it. For other fire info I belong to Cal Fire. Some of the groups are very active and some less so, but they are all a wealth of info. Just search for scanner groups in your county or city.

I also listen to Broadcastify on my computer while reading posts or playing games. That is a live scanner and I just pick my area that I am in and then I can listen to the police as they stop people, chase people, etc You can listen to almost any part of the country if you choose that station.

More than you wanted to know I am sure.
