I love that story. We need to remember our good memories like these. I don't know why my family (minus my mom) got in the habit of our major celebration being Christmas Eve. (My sister and brother, both older than me remember Christmas morning. We moved further out into the suburbs when I was 5, and I'm guessing this started then.) But for several years we all piled in the car and drove about an hour to the Chicago neighborhood of one of my parents best friends. It was well known and photographed (I didn't know that at the time, but years later always saw it in the Sunday magazine section of the Chicago Tribune) to drive those streets and see the homes in their Christmas splendor. Miraculously, when we arrived home after 9, Santa had been and we opened presents. We had more presents Christmas day from grandparents who came, etc, and our big Christmas dinner mid afternoon. Then we all piled in the car, Mom included, and drove back out to those same friends house to spend several hours with them Christmas night. The funniest thing, they got later and later each year with their own dinner and we were trying to arrive after. I think they did it deliberately to feed us again lol.
