damp Tuesday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

damp Tuesday

Postby BarbaraRose » Tue Jul 10, 2018 11:32 am

Good morning gals.

I slept in my bedroom last night but couldn't get to sleep until around 3am. Of course I woke up at 8am. I see a nap in my future!

It spritzed off and on yesterday and then we got some decent rain overnight which is badly needed. Still cloudy out so maybe more on the way. However, it is now very humid out. The temps are down but very sticky making it hard to sleep. Am hoping I can get my AC put in soon.

The Alpine fire ended up destroying almost 40 homes! It is finally mostly contained but such a huge loss for a smaller community.

Hope you all have a good day!

I just attempted a scooter ride. If I'd gotten out a couple hours earlier I might have been successful. In a couple blocks the humidity had me not wanting to be out unless I took off my long sleeves and I was sweating under the helmet but instead of not being safe, I'm back and sitting inside with my a.c. running. If I don't start riding more I'm going to consider selling it. I so loved my last one, but this time weather is kicking my butt. I think I'll hold on through the winter and hope I use it then.

Barbie, the humidity isn't normal here either. Sucks. But I feel guilty complaining with the fires, etc.

We are expecting triple digits this week with our lows in the 60's. Thank goodness for AC. Low this morning was 57.....beautiful. I love Fall weather.................C'mon Fall. Basically hate summer.

Had my bone density test today. No big deal only took about 30 minutes. Results tomorrow afternoon most likely. I dont really care as I am not taking any of those meds no matter what the results are. I told my Doc that and she basically just told me to humor her LOL I really dislike taking pills. Pill for this, pill for that...sheesh I never took Hormone replacement pills either for menopause, I just sucked it up. And now I dont have to worry about the risks involved with it. I do take a couple of supplements but I get to control them. I take Vitamin D because I live in Oregon LOL

Karen this is a link to an interesting article on bone density.I took them for about 8 months years ago and my stomach has never been the same. I have had a terrible time since last November when I had to start Blood Pressure meds but other than that Itake nothing. I should do the vitamin D but stomach can't tolerate them or any vitamin thanks to the bone density drugs.

I blame Fosamax for many problems I have now.

This discussion is interesting. I have never taken calcium because of my problems with kidney stones and never taken any of the bone meds like Fosamax, alhough my mother did. Luckily, my bones are fairly good, so I am glad I never had to take any of that stuff. Sorry to hear that they cause problems. Makes me glad I never took any.

I do take large doses of vitamin E. per my doctor's suggestion, because mine was very low at one time, and there is some strong evidence that low E levels cause cancer. It is now normal, thankfully, so doses are slightly lowered.

I tried taking some over-the-counter calcium supplements at one time, but they tasted so dreadful that I quit them after just a few days. Never have taken any prescription meds for calcium.

I am lucky, I guess, in that I can still consume a lot of dairy products without any problems or issues. I even still go through about a gallon of (low fat) milk per week, I'm trusting that this takes care of my bone density issues,

I have never had a broken bone except the time (in my early 20's) when my horse that I was riding fell on me and broke my arm. Someone in a passing car honked and revved their engine, my horse shied, his hooves slipped out from under him (we were crossing the street on pavement, almost at the entrance to the stables) and down he went, fracturing my elbow when my elbow hit the ground. Lucky for me, he rolled away from me as he struggled to get to his feet, had he rolled the other way I would not now be here typing this.

I try to avoid most medications. Since I am a Certified Old Fart I have been around long enough to see medications "du jour" come - and go. They come with great fanfare, trumpeting their ability to totally remedy problem "x", only to be removed from the market, or their distribution seriously curtailed, a few years later when they are shown to cause unpleasant - and often permanent - side effects.

I am not a health food practitioner, by any means - I consume way too much junk that isn't good for me - but I do try to stay away from medications, unless or until I am seriously in need.

Beth, would be interested to know what kind of problems you put down to Fosamax?

Thanks.

I took Fosamax for a while about 25 or 30 years ago. I thought it was giving me migraines but it was probably the chocolate. I switched to something else for a short while. About this time the reports started coming out about all the problems so I quit taking anything. My step-daughter took a wrong step in her back yard about a year ago and her femur snapped. She had been on Fosamax for years. It just didn't make any sense to me that a medicine that was suppose to make your bones stronger was causing bones to snap.

All the ads on TV for new medicines are so stupid. One of the side effects for most of them is that they could kill you. Sure, I want to take some of that.

Over the years they decide there are things you shouldn't eat and then in a few years it is ok. At one time it was eggs. I pretty much ignore all that crap.

I had to keep a blood pressure log for a month after I went to the heart doctor. They called the other day and said I was fine. I still have a chest pain every so often. Yesterday when it happened I drank some tea and it went away. I think a lot of the time I am dehydrated.

Er. . . wow. Just wow. I often think that the chief beneficiaries of taking drugs are the drug manufacturers. The people actually taking the drugs. . . not so much.

OMG!! TOO TRUE!!! I often can't quite believe my ears when they rattle off possible/probable side effects as warp speed as the happy-smiling-people in the commercial seem overjoyed. It is astonishing that people considering these drugs don't listen to this part of the commercial. A few years ago it was "take this for restless leg syndrome". One never hears about this syndrome any more. This year is is probably something else. I say "probably" because I don't have cable anymore (haven't for the last eight years or so) and watch all of my tv streamed over the internet, 99.9% of which is commercial-free, so (so sad!) miss out on the endless advertisements for new drugs.

Oh, yes, I remember about eggs. A while back coffee was the worst thing ever. Just now coffee will extend your life span. A while back red wine was good for you. Just now consumption of any and all alchohol causes cancer.

Martha, I'm with you and Karen on this. Do what you want, eat what you want, live how you want. No one of us ever gets out of here alive, anyway.  Might just as well have some fun in the meantime!!

I am blessed with low blood pressure. When I went in for cataract surgery a few years back, the nurse took my blood pressure before wheeling me in and exclaimed "You weren't supposed to take your blood pressure medication this morning!!!" I replied to her: "I don't take blood pressure medication". That got her quiet. I'm not sure she believed me!

This is my theory too! Everything can potentially kill you. I figure if I make myself miserable by eating or not eating certain things and worrying about it all, I will get run over by a bus anyways. So may as well eat and do what I want and enjoy life until that bus comes along!

I actually suffer from restless leg syndrome quite often. I even sometimes get it in my hands and arms. I take a product called "Restful Legs" which I think is mostly natural ingredients and it works well. I just take one tablet under my tongue as needed. There are no known side effects. I get it at Walmart.
