IS this a 'scam'

Postby Redetotry » Thu Apr 20, 2017 9:08 am

I advertised Elsie on Craig's list and had a really low ball offer, like $7,500 lower!! I told them my bottom line and they came back $3,000 below. They said they are 5 hours away and it would be cash, a quick sale and that they are buying it for a friend out west. The friend out west was what made me suspicious. Also how would they do quick cash, I certainly wouldn't take a cashiers check without holding the RV until it cleared. The only safe thing I can think of would be a transfer from their bank account into mine. Are there any other ways to handle a 'cash' transaction, maybe in a big bag

They are idiots wasting your time
when I bought my motorhome I took cash.
I was nervous but I made arrangements
at the bank the day before, it was put in
bundles for easier counting. When I went
to the bank they took me into a private
teller room that was licked behind us, each
bundle was counted by us both and then
rebundled. She gave me a printout of how
many 20's, 50's, 100's and the total. I took
a bigger purse, lol. Then when I picked up
the mh, the seller counted again. Everyone was
happy and no one had to wait for a check to
clear. I did however have armed backup with
me (my friend Bill) that much cash made me
nervous

Cash is cash. If they have cash that's works for me. You can always get one of these pens to make sure it's good legal tender. http://www.officeworld.com/Worlds-Biggest-Selection/MMF200045110/14Q1/ It's what tellers use to check bills. As long as you are happy with the price.

I think I would do what Ava did and tell them they have to show up at my bank with cash money. NO checks of any kind, pay pal or any of those cash card of any kind. That should get rid of them.

I see some red flags on this. If you are not in a big hurry to sell it, I would pass on this one. It sounds a little fishy to me...just sayin'. You have to be very careful on CL because there are a lot of scammers and unscrupulous people out there.

I told them I'm not willing to take the price they offered as I'm not in a hurry. They were very polite when I told them. Still made me wonder. Wow Ava, good idea I would have never thought of that and didn't know the bank would do that for you.
Good idea Martha of having them bring cash to my bank. Thanks Melissa for the information about the pen to check if cash is real. The things we have to know now!!!

We use those type pens at the store, too.

I am getting a cashiers check to pay for my trailer. I don't like to mess with that much cash either.

When I sold my first Roadtrek, I had the buyers meet me at my credit union with cash and had the bank check the cash for me. I was suspect because my caller had a foreign accent, was calling for a friend who didn't speak English, was willing to pay cash US, Canadian, cashier's check, etc. Was buying sight unseen...all red flags. But it turned out to be a Canadian dealer who checked it out at the bank before handing over the cash. I had posted many detailed photos, so he had a good idea what he was getting. I just wish he'd told me who he was so I wouldn't have stressed about it so much, lol.

Those replies on CL make me very nervous. my hubby thinks I worry too much about this stuff. Could be ok but you have to take care of yourself!
We sold our pop up on CL. The family came to our house to inspect and handshake the deal. We did the actual hand off at our local bank - the bank manager notarized our bill of sale and made sure the payment was good (they had a cashier's check) before we unhooked from our truck and on to theirs. It was for significantly less $$ than what you are dealing with, but was the only way I was comfortable with the transaction.
Hope it all works out on the sale!

I paid cash for my mh. Walked the two blocks over with the money in my pocket. When the sellers found out they said I should have called them, they would have come and picked me up. Two of my friends said the same thing. One said I was crazy to walk with that much money on me. Probably, but I did it anyway.

Be careful of cashier's checks. They have become very good at forging them so they are not as reliable as they used to be. When I sold my RV on Craig's list I got several scammers wanting to pay thru Paypal. Even got an email from "Paypal" saying there was $17,000 in my account from buyer. Paypal has a limit of $10,000 and the email was a forgery. In my scam they never intended to actually get the RV, they said they needed the "shipping fee" in cash and would add the cost into the sales price and all I had to do was wire the shipping fee to them. YEAH, RIGHT. Personally I would only do cash at the bank and let them check the cash for forgeries, especially of $100 bills.
