Oroville Dam update

Postby MandysMom » Tue Feb 14, 2017 3:26 pm

Noon news. The road across the auxiliary spillway leading to a parking area had completely washed away during the run over event down that dirt spillway. Overnight they built a completely new road leading to the eroded areas. They finished with dropping one ton loads of large rock and have been dumping sand. Next step is they set up a huge crane type pumper and we watched as some of the first cement trucks arrived to begin laying concrete over the rock to stabilize the areas of erosion. Rain expected by tomorrow night. Not as much ran as last weeks deluge, and more snow on higher slopes where last week rain level was higher melting snow. Water behind dam now down at least 12 ft with them trying to get it down 50 ft for future rain, snow melt and so they can inspect the back of the spillway. 50 ft sounds like a lot and it's a bunch of water but the dam when full last saturday was 902 ft of water ! They still are not telling people when they can go home.
Nice story. I live in Placer County and the county fairgrounds is here. In preparation for arriving and expected evacuees, they had asked for certain donations. Last night they realized they were low on pillows. An announcement went out over tv. They now have plenty of pillows but now need pillow cases! :D it's reported local Walmarts are now depleted of pillows! They ask, our area gives. Pretty neat.

Oh COOL! yesterday it was Blackhawks helicopters. Just short while ago, my very favorite helicopters, the Sikorsky Sky Cranes arrived on scene. Much heavier load capacity so work will go faster. More than double capacity of Blackhawks. And they are so cool looking, like a giant grasshopper! We used to see them when we lived across the valley from Stead Airport north of Reno ESP during fire season where the sky cranes carry large chambers of water or buckets to dump.

Evacuation has been lifted per 1:30 news briefing. It has been amazing watching the water management teams getting road rebuilt and errosion holes filled with 2 ton bags of rocks and cement poured from the "green grasshopper." TV coverage here in CA is doing its job. Those earth crevaces caused by the overflowing water from the spillways are pretty scary. Considering that So CA gets its water from No CA.

Thanks Velda for the updates. I'm surprised that more onlookers haven't wanted to try to get closer to the Orroville Damn area.

This morning as the kcra chopper was there he got warning of a unknown and therefore unauthorized drone in the area the Blackhawks and Cranes were flying! That was scary to hear. KCRA pilot said he could see from his allowed higher vantage point police with red lights going through the nearby neighborhood looking for the drone operator who if caught will lose the drone and a big chink of $$ as well as possible jail time!
Sheriff in the area said Evacuation not "Lifted" but changed from mandatory to Advisory Warning status, so people can go home but may stay evacuated if they think it might be too hard to get back out. they said anyone who does go home must be ready to leave at a moments notice ESP during rain later in the week in case of the situation getting worse again.
Now they are talking about other Dams in CA such as San Pedro nearing 100% full and not being able to get rid of water fast enough ! Oh my!

Thanks Velda for all the good info. We have been getting blurbs and bits down here. Also, no one that Ihave seen has mentioned Lake berriessa. There is a camp ground at the base of that dam. I stayed there once, but was not comfortable while there. Never again.
The state of California really goofs on these important infrastructures. I will not get on my soap box.

I am back home. An "evacuation advisory" remains in effect here.

What this means is that my office is open, so I am required to come to work - but if something happens, I hope to hell I can get back home in time to get my dog.

:-(
