Up & at 'em

Postby SoCalGalcas » Sat Apr 16, 2016 11:45 am

I have graduated from the walker to the cane! Physical therapy is a b$@?h! It hurts like the dickens. I now must go to the pt building 2x/week for the next two weeks. I think there is more, however I shut down on those directions! Two weeks of direction were enough for my poor body to hear!
During these two weeks, there are exercises I must do, 3x/day. at home.
The way I feel right now, I M not going to have the other knee done. Am I a whuss YES?
I will use the walker to walk out on the street. I feel more secure with it.
I still cannot go into the swim pool for two more weeks. And, our weather is beautiful and warm!
I've enjoyed reading all the news on here. Thanks everyone who is posting.

My husband had both knees done at the same time. That was a b$@?h! He was afraid he wouldn't have the other one done if he had just one done. Thank god they put him in a rehab hospital for 2 weeks. I don't know how we would have gotten him in the house if they had let him come home. I was so hoping that they wouldn't let me stay with him but they did.

Hang in there, it will be worth it when the rehab is over. I think it probably takes close to a year to completely heal.

A friend of mine also did both at once. He said he'd go through that hell once or not at all, so the doctor did it. But he said that the end result was so worthwhile he might have done the second, but why have twice the healing time? My heart goes out to you, because I know it can't be fun.

You're not a wuss, Lyn. I've had many many broken bones, multiple surgeries, and countless injuries over the years... NOTHING compares to my knee replacement, it was by far the most painful and challenging thing I've ever done, so I definitely feel for you. I'm 14 months out from mine and I will tell you, at a couple of points you will turn a noticeable corner and make a big leap forward in healing. It does get better, but it sure doesn't feel like it at first. Hang in there!

Big hugs to you, Lynn. Ouch! What a PITA. You're one of the most capable, gutsy women I've ever met, so you'll get through this. Never underestimate the power of chocolate, wine and swearing. I recommend all three at the same time if possible.  You're in my thoughts.

Queen, it's good to see you post.

I had knee surgery 16 years ago. It wasn't a replacement but repair on the meniscus. Therapy was aweful! The surgeon botched the surgery so had to have a second one to fix it but there was permanent damage done. Still have issues with it.
I hear the replacements are usually very successful so am sure you will be doing great in no time!

Working with the population I did, I knew/know several PTs well......yes they are the nicest people that everyone @$#%@ out during rehab and hug and cry with when they get their mobility and stability back. :) Keep up the most excellent work! I am sure that there are still corners of SD you can show me when I drive back west of the Mississippi again......

It will get better, I promise you. Right now you have a lot of pain from the surgery and from the swelling. Keep propping your leg up because that will help.

Lyn, good to hear you are progressing. Just watched a couple of friends go through knee surgery. Was bad at first but then they both turned a corner and are glad they had it done! Slow and steady! My friend"s DH swears by the hydro therapy he did in the pool! Said if he has to have the other knee done he's going to spend his recovery in Myrtle Beach so he can be in the pool!

It is a slow recovery but as others have said, it will soon get much better.
I have not had knees replaced but did have both hips done. After the problems with first one, I was sure I couldn't endure having 2nd one done but the pain eventually became more than I could handle. It has now been several years since last replacement and I am so glad I did it. Walking with less pain is so worth the temporary woes of the surgery.
