And they said to keep her quiet

Postby Redetotry » Thu Oct 09, 2014 7:26 am

It is going to be a long 10 days!! We had Mitzi spayed yesterday and I don't know if any of us will make it through except her. I have to put a harness on her to let her out of her crate and last night I took it off of her at bedtime. WRONG :!: :!: :!: when she wanted out to potty at 4:30AM it took me 3 tries to get it on with all her wriggling and my state of being half awake. On the first attempt I had her head and one leg through the opening that goes over her head, thought I was going to have to cut it off. Next attempt I had it on upside down. At this point I am ready to stick her back in the crate and run away. Finally got it on her, hear the rain and tell her to use her paper, as she can't get the stitches wet, if in fact there are any stitches left. I can't get her in a position that I can check, I can see there is quite a bit of swelling around the incision so that is maybe causing her extreme behavior. Got her back in her crate, cleaned the floor as her position on her paper was less than accurate and crashed on the couch until I heard her again at six. I pulled the cushions off the couch so she can't jump on it and closed off the rest of the house so she only has access to kitchen and family room and fixed coffee. I have a feeling a trip back to the vet to plead for some drugs & pick up a cone collar is first order of the day. That or drop her off at the door and tell them I'll be back in 10 days!!!

Oh BJ! Been there done that. Buddy, fortunately for me, cannot reach his sutures or I'm sure he'd be licking them out like he did with his paw last year. You definitely need some help to check her incision and make sure those things are in there-when I worked at a vet's office years ago we had a big dog that pulled all her stitches out right after spaying and we had to do her all over again. I'm surprised they didn't send you home with an ecollar.

I got a look and stitches are still in there but I think the swelling is causing them to really bother her. She isn't chewing on them she just won't stay still longer than about 30 seconds then runs hunched over to a different spot to crash. If I lock her in the crate she tries to dig out so don't know which activity is worst. I just called the vet again and said "you have to do something" so waiting for a call back the tech said maybe the vet would say a Benadryl is ok to give her. I'm turning her over to DH and going to bed as soon as they call I'm worn out!

Couldn't you put some Neosporin on it to ease the discomfort and avoid infection?

:) :) Brave or really stupid, especially one that is so challenging. The breeder said she was full of spunk and energy! But yes she has been fun and given us lots of laughs.

I tried to put some aloe vera gel where they shaved her thinking that would be soothing but soon found she would have to be restrained to get near enough to touch her.

We were able to get a little nap as the Benadryl has helped but she is still obviously in a lot of discomfort. Have another call into the vet asking if there is a reason he isn't giving something for pain. They gave Toby pain meds when he had a hernia repair.

DH said he was going to town for bread and surprised me by driving to a nearby town to a little diner that has my favorite chicken and dumplings on Thursday and brought me some for lunch. All those carbs helped with my nap. :D

I'm a little concerned that she is in such discomfort, still. Having been around literally hundreds of spayed and neutered pups, it was rare for us to see one so uncomfortable after the first night. Was anything else done?

And my heart goes out to you and her!

Some dogs don't tolerate pain or discomfort well. She could be one of those. But I would think they would have sent home some pain meds for you to use at least the first few days.

Maybe her being so hyper is making it hurt more.

I finally got her some pain medication for Mitzi. I can't believe they didn't send any home with her or give me any the first time I called and told them how bad she was. She didn't have any other procedures done only spayed but she is really sensitive. If she has a mat and I happen to pull it a little she yelps like I have pulled her hair out. I've groomed dogs for years and never had one so sensitive. Thank you all for being with me though the day.
