Who knew!!

Postby Redetotry » Thu Jul 31, 2014 4:17 pm

ACK as Soos says, who knew one tiny puppy could cause such bedlam. I have been at my wits end and have lost at least 2 pounds since her arrival on last Sunday, not even a week. I think I've mentioned Toby my Miniature Poodle took and instant dislike to her and tried to bite her. We, more like I, have been trying to keep them separated and I am totally frazzled. Called a dog trainer last night and was going to send him away for training for 4-6 weeks. DH did not think it was a good idea and I was also a bit nervous about it. So the man, who we have know a long time personally but haven't kept up with his work, came today and gave us options. I now know how Mom's feel when school starts!! He will pick him up at 10:00 and return him at five. He will take him to his home, introduce him to his dogs and will take him to different public places for socialization. Also I think things like going swimming with his dogs and other outside activities are on the schedule. We are trying this for 5 days and then evaluating his progress. I knew he needed to get out more but this will be better than me doing it by trial and error and I can get some rest. I don't want to loose more weight!
Wish us luck.

I hope it all works out BJ, I'm sure it will. Three years ago when I got my six-week old puppy Abby, after about a week I was exhausted. My older dog accepted her so I didn't have the same problem as you're experiencing. Mostly it was because I was determined to get her potty trained as soon as possible and wore myself out keeping her on a leash and taking her out often which involved stairs each time. At the time my daughter suggested maybe I should give her back to the lady I got her from. I said no because I didn't want to fail. It was a hard 2 months, but in that time she was completely potty trained and has turned out to be just the sweetest dog. Every night I tell both my dogs I know they're God's angels. So don't give up. It won't be long and hopefully she and Toby will become best friends.

BJ so sorry to hear that Toby is not yet accepting the little one. Hopefully, some socialization will help and Toby won't feel that other dogs, especially puppies, are a threat.

I'll will be sending positive thoughts down south to you and I've told Zorro to hope his little friend is accepted soon so you & your home can get back to normal.

I am assuming it is Toby going with the trainer since he is the one having issues, not the puppy?

I hope it all works out. New introductions are always a challenge, some more so than others. Cats can be especially difficult.

So sorry, BJ. Really hope this works out for you and both fur babies.

You may recall, Nicky was a badly abused rescue and I had a difficult time with him for a while. He is fine now about 90% of the time but there are still situations that cause problems; both vet and trainer tell me it is defensive aggression. Not sure if all of it will ever go away but thankful that most of it has as he is truly a sweetheart.

Sounds like an extreme case of jealousy. The new baby is invading his home and probably getting lots of attention.

Thanks everyone, other than the fact that for the first time the puppy did not sleep through the night things are a little better today. She yipped loudly for about three hours. Cheryl & Zorro know her volume capability! Needless to say, tonight the little darling will be placed beside my bed, or I'll sleep in here with her.

Barbie yes, it is Toby who is going to the trainer, who by the way called ten minutes before he was supposed to pick him up this morning and said he 'forgot' it was his birthday and his family had made plans. Certainly not a good way to start with a new client, even if he does know us.

Sarah, I remember you said Nicky had a bad beginning he is such a sweetie, I hope Toby will improve that much.

BJ, if I remember right, Toby is still pretty young himself, so hopefully by working with the trainer your home will become more pleasant. Hang in there & keep us updated on how things are going.

If your puppy causes weight loss you can ship him to me.

Hang in there, things get better. Bet he wouldn't cry at all if you bring him to bed with you. Both my furbabies sleep with me. Don't think I could sleep if they weren't cuddled up with me under the covers and P.S. I NEVER get cold.

Puppies can upset the household That's for sure! But I'm sure both your fur babies
Will make it through... I remember when I got Maggie She was 8 weeks old.. I was making my living Going to craft shows and selling my wares.. Doing decorative painting at the time.. And I had to sit there And paint most of the day... Could not hold her She totally did not like that... So
I put her in a laundry basket beside me Put my leg in it.. She would curl up around my foot...And she was happy....and I was happy.... it worked great..... and of course there was no way getting around it... she had to sleep with me!!

Ava, she is a Havanese. Karen, last night I slept with her  She only cried when I left to got to the bathroom, she isn't housebroken or she could sleep with me. My bed is pretty high and I'm afraid she would jump off.

Had to take Andy to the vet this morning, DH was up with him every hour as he had bloody diarrhea. She said it was new puppy stress and gave him some antibiotics just in case. Toby was to go with a trainer from 10 to 5 today but I postponed. I figured if Toby wasn't here Andy would be even more stressed. It's only been a few weeks since we lost Winnie and he might think Toby wasn't coming back either.
Maybe I should rent her out as a guaranteed weight loss program, I lost another pound.

sshhhh - don't tell BJ ;) the little one slept in my bed the one night she was here. Put a towel down and she was fine. Kept waking up to find her in a different position but she never left the towel.

If the trainer doesn't seem to work out, do you have dog park near you where you could go to work with Toby?

True confession coming out here :) :) Hey I don't blame you if she was quiet. I was about willing to sleep in her bed if it would have meant she would be quiet. But hopefully I found the secret to success, last night we put her crate beside the bed and not a peep all night. Hallelujah!! I also discovered she is paper trained, since she was going outside so well I was wondering how to teach her to also use the paper inside. But she saw it in the bedroom for the first time and promptly used it. I though it was just luck and she would have used a rug if it was handy but she has since demonstrated her skill several times.

Using a crate in my bedroom for a young pup has always worked for me. Gave them enough security to sleep and if I heard them get restless,I would get up and take them outside.....
