black water question

I've been going to ask this question for a few days but for lack of the proper terminology have hesitated but decided that I'd just do my best and if it wasn't enough would fumble around until I communicated well enough
I have ooze...yes poo ooze.... typically when in a campground this wouldn't be a problem as the sewer hose would be in the hole and all would go where it should...although it creates a problem when going to set up the sewer hose into said hole!!! I'd had some in the past but just thought it was left from the water not cleaning the hose well enough...before I went to DD's house I drained all the tanks and didn't use the bathroom at all..when I got up at my dd's house I filled the black water tank and drained it twice...(my son in law has told me that I could just let the grey water go into the tree's one way of watering them) they don't have a sewer connection for me to plug into ) so a few days later went to do the same thing with the grey water tanks and before I had filled them for some reason went and check the hose guess to make sure it was going where I wanted it to...and there was ooze in the hose so thought what in the world didn't I close the tank went and checked and yes it was closed as closed as I could get it but not the same as the grey water lever was can't get it to go in any further (it's been this way for years but hadn't seemed to be a problem but then maybe because it was DH's job I didn't know about it) so guess my question is this how do I get that lever or what ever one would call it to go in further....have to use the restroom to far from the house not to especially first thing in the am and last thing at night...I have a company come pump me out. If I take the hose off and put the lid on still will have ooze that will create a problem when I go to have them come out and they open the lid...just not sure what to do and how

Sounds like the dump valve is leaking. You need to replace it, Sheila. Any rv repair shop can do that, or your son can do it. It's really not difficult, but not something I think you could do. Tank needs to be dumped and flushed thoroughly before attempting the replacement. Hope things are going well for you...Hugs, my friend...see you in Jan!!

I agree it sounds like you dump valve is leaking. Sometimes they get paper or junk stuck in them and they don't seal right. I had to have one of mine cleaned so the valve would shut right. You can see it's a pretty simple gate valve. If the "gate" can't seat correctly it will weep yucky water.

Sheila, I agree with Melissa & Sharon, so won't repeat what they've said.

I do want to comment on your situation on your son's house, though. Somewhere on his property he's got a sewer clean-out trap. It's a piece of 4" PVC that sticks up from the ground about 6" and has a cap that's usually secured with a band that can be removed. If you can find that & it's close enough to your rig, you can hook up to that to dump. Again, making a pitch for my Sewer Solution, this is the perfect situation for using it. You can keep it hooked up ALL the time, keep your grey tank open, and dump your black whenever you need to. AND it'll work on a slight incline without issue. Google it and watch the videos on how it works.

That Sewer Solution is great! I talked my exBF into getting one when he bought his new house and we found the sewer cleanout on the back porch, close to where he parked his toy trailer. Worked like a charm and it was a slight uphill area!

You can keep it hooked up ALL the time, keep your grey tank open, and dump your black whenever you need to. Laura

If you leave your grays open all the time you run the risk of sewer gnats in your RV. If you need to leave the gray open you need to put a water trap in the line. You can do that by making a low spot in the hose (like the "u" in the pipe under your sink) When full of water it will keep the gnats out of your tanks and thus your RV. I leave my grays shut and use the water to flush my hose after dumping the black tanks.

Thanks for the heads up, Melissa. I don't know that it's an issue with the type of hose the Sewer Solution uses, though. It's small -- 1", and water is in it most of the time while the grey tank is open, as there isn't a lot of pressure to push it through. I've been hooked up for a week with it open and never experienced smell or gnats. Lucky? Don't know. Don't think so, though. Maybe it's another plus of this system. Sure would like to think it is.

When I have full hookups, I definitely keep my grey open except for my last shower before dumping the black tank. And because I have a back flush when I'm hooked up, I don't even always close it for that last shower anymore. My tanks are small, and I'd be having to dump the grey almost daily otherwise. When I was in a very humid climate one summer, I was shutting it because of the gnats, but that's the only time I've had the problem. I would close again and deal with dumping daily/every other day if I had the problem again, though.

one of the projects that zoomed to the top of the need list.... hate to have to have them come pump me out with what little bit is there but guess it is something that I will have to do cost 35 or that is what it was last year. I'd love to find there sewer thing just have no idea where it is and quite frankly not sure they do either even though they have lived there for ll almost 12 years I'm betting...will have to look into that system Laura...I got some stuff that they say dissolves the gunk that can build up in the tanks and suppose to make the sensors work can't remember the black water sensor working although I'm sure it did till we used it haven't used it yet so don't know if it works
