Kit

Postby havingfunnow » Mon Apr 07, 2014 7:27 pm

I made a little excursion to the Peoria area last weekend, and look what followed me home! :D

Image

Her name is Kit. She's a vintage fiberglass trailer, 13 feet including the tongue, weight about 1200 lbs. She tows like there's nothing there.

She's going to be a bit of a project -- but oh, my, what fun!

Very cute. If you don't know exactly what kind it is, I bet Yakn can tell us.

I can't show you a photo of the other side until I replace the door handle -- it bounced out on the way home, and I taped a plastic bag over the gap. Can't have the baby appearing in public like that!

Kit is a 1985 U-Haul. For several years in the mid-eighties they rented camping trailers, built to their specs. Nice tough little trailers. I'm thrilled to have found one in such solid condition. I'll have to stretch my skill set a bit to do everything I want, but I won't have to worry about the frame, etc.

Here's a quick look at the inside.

My neighbor at the Ruston, LA Getaway Gal rally had one of those. Her's is painted blue and white. She said she saw it sitting in someone's field and bought it. It looks like they have done some work on it.

Well, the first thing is to clean, clean, clean -- she was a portable hunting cabin for a while, and then a children's playhouse, so she's pretty grubby. Oh -- that's after replacing the door latch! Then I need to replace the cooktop. The present one works safely, but it looks like something guys on hunting trips owned. I don't think it will scrub clean! That will keep me busy for a little while.

Absolutely adorable! The nice thing about older rigs is that you can do anything you want with them without feeling like you might be lowering their value if you paint it purple or something.
