Need a little camera input

Just found out last night that my present camera and Windows 8 (damn I hate Windows 8) are not compatible. So I have surfing around looking for a new camera. Does anyone have a Canon Powershot SX510 HS? If you what do you think of it? Or give me some suggestions. My want list includes a rechargeable battery but not AA's...a good zoom 16 or +(new grandbaby coming and I don't want to have to be right his face to get a good shot) and the camera comes with a cords etc needed and fairly easy to operate, I want to stay under 250-300. Can anyone help me out?

Oh, man, there are so many and they change models so quickly, don't they? What I would do is go straight to amazon.com and just search for "digital camera" and see what comes up at the top of the list, which should be the most popular at the best price. Then on the left column, you should be able to narrow down options from there. (And you're sure there's no updated driver for your camera that you could download? Always worth a search!)

Have you tried taking out your memory card from your camera & loading the pics directly onto the computer from the card? This should eliminate compatibility issues - unless they are stored in some proprietary format.

Pat, I've got the Canon SX280 HS and LOVE it. This is my second Canon point-and-shoot, and they're rugged little cameras. My old one performed flawlessly when I took my raft trip down the Colorado River -- still works great, but am now using it at school. If you do a comparison between the one you're looking at and mine, I think you'll find them quit similar, except that mine is smaller.

I have a very nice DSLR camera but find myself using the Canon more often than not. I keep it in my purse, or can even put it in my pocket if necessary. It's got a rechargeable battery that has a long life, can take video clips, and does a great job in low light. Can't remember exactly how much it cost, but it's in your ballpark.

While my iPhone can take good pictures, I really like having a "real" camera and don't mind hauling one around.

Also, I don't know if you use a desktop PC or a laptop, but either one should be able to support an SD card reader, if you don't have one on a laptop. It's far easier than trying to hook up your camera to your computer/laptop.

Why does your camera have to be compatible with your Windows program? As said above, use the memory card to upload your pictures.

That said I love my Kodak cameras, but there are many out there I'd be happy with.

I have had the Nikon Coolpix P510 for a year now and am extremely happy with it. It has all the bells and whistles that I could ever need. I too got it for the coming of the grandbaby. The newer model is the P520 thus they have reduced the price of the 510.

If you are happy with your present camera then, as per above, load your pictures via the memory card.

As for Windows 8, it was a bit of a learning curve, now I am pleased that I took the time to figure it out.

That doesn't always work. My last laptop would not take my SD from my Canon (but would take Nikon). New laptop takes the card.

Pat, as Catherine suggested try direct from camera to computer - it's a pain but might work.

I'm definitely not a computer geek, but there is not a port on my lap top for the card and when I connect the camera direct the computer does not recognize it. I went to the Sony website to look for a download and it said that the camera was not compatible with Windows 7 or 8. Besides...I never was overly fond of the camera....and I want a higher zoom.
