Piroxicam

Beck is on the daily chemo pill and he's also taking piroxicam, which does not have good longterm effects. It's giving him some tummy problems, which his vet game me some pills to help, but can't be on them permanently. We have an appt with the oncologist at the end of the month and I am hoping to switch him to something that won't cause the problems he is having. Wondering if anyone here can recommend a replacement.

so sorry about Beck. My Bandit was on Piroxicam for awhile too and he also got the tummy issues. Vet switched him over to
Meloxicam (sp?) label calls it medicam. Its liquid and it worked well with no issues. I've used it on all my dogs over the past
few years.

I don't know anything about piroxicam or what it's for???? But Ava mentioned medicam, which I used for my dog's severe arthritis, & he did well on it. He had bad hips, so for the last 3 years of his life, the medicam helped him keep moving a bit better. Hope you find a solution for your Beck.

My Casey was put on Metacam when she fell and hurt her hip. She tolerated it well with no side effects. Sorry about your pooch.

It's for soft tissue sarcoma to go with his chemo pill. The last one he got was Thursday night and he is much happier now. I sent a note to his oncologist, but I probably won't hear from her til Tuesday. He is getting his chemo pill and immunity supplement and going to talk with a vet tech today on this, plus I want to see about getting him to a holistic vet.

His vet gave us metronidazole and it does help, but he can't stay on that, which to me is not a solution but a temporary bandaid. Thank you, I'll see if the metacam or meloxicam can work as a replacement.

I don't know about there, but there are some good veterinary oncologists in my big city, plus the vet school at Texas A&M. Doesn't LSU have a vet school?

Yes they do, but I'm trying to work with the local oncologist, we are also looking at a holistic vet to see if natural medicines would be better for him. This appt is set for next month.

We have taken horses to the LSU vet school and we would not take another one there. It was quite a few years ago. I would get a recommendation from someone who has taken a dog there recently before I would take one.

That is not good, I only know one person that brought their dog there for chemo, but she lived just minutes away and worked from home, so Nike was only there when he needed to be, Beck would have to stay.

The more I think about everything and talking with others, the holistic vet is the way to go.

When I was growing up in Illinois we took one of our beef cows to Purdue University's vet school for stomach problems. They did surgery (which they allowed us to film), and diagnoised her with stomach cancer. We donated her so they could use her to learn how to treat the disease. I still recall all the many farm animals in inside pens being treated: horses with casts on their legs etc.

Stressing with you about Beck, and hoping you find some treatment that will help him but allow him to feel good as well. Treating our 4-footers is no different than treating our 2-footers, in my mind, and that includes ourselves! Sending healing powers to Beck.

Thank you, the Holistic Vet suggested Tumeric in place of the piroxicam. It is a natural antiflammatory, so the harsh side effects are not there, unfortunately, it's also a spice and I had to swap it out for benedryl a few times a week.
