Leaky Toilet???

Leaky Toilet???

Postby JudyJB » Tue Jul 17, 2012 8:18 pm

Is there something simple I am missing?

For the past few days, my bathroom has smelled like pee. I found a puddle a couple of days ago next to the toilet on the pedastal and cleaned it up with lysol, but there is still some residual smell. It is not a sewer smell, but a urine smell.

Now, I absolutely positively know I am NOT missing the toilet when I use it, and I live alone in my motorhome with no recent visitors!!! I am also immediately flushing. In addition, I am keeping the black tank at less than 1/2 full. Actually, the last couple of days, I am keeping it at less than 1/4 full.

There is a plastic ring around the bottom of the toilet that I assume is hiding stuff like whatever is fastening the toilet to the floor and sealing the pipes. I can see down the pipe when I flush and everything looks clear and open.

Any suggestions? I have an appintment at a dealer for warranty things on August 6, but that is a long time to go with a slightly smelly bathroom!

My only suggestion is to make sure there is water ran through the bathroom sink. Keeping water in the drain pipes prevents any odors from coming up from the holding tank.

Had this problem when we first got our MH and just tigntened up the nuts on the base of the toilet holding it down and that took care of the problem. Don't overtighten and good luck.

Also, you don't want to dump the tank all the time at 1/4 full or even 1/2 full - is good to let it get more full. The other reason you could have the odor is the vent that goes up to the roof. Make sure nothing is clogging it. And make sure when you flush, you are getting some water down there.

Are you using any tank deodorizer? The liquid or throw ins? I don't always use them, but they can help with the odor problem, also - if it's simply coming from the tank. And make sure your seal is good - so that you aren't getting a smell coming up because the seal isn't. If it's good, it'll hold water in the tank - if it's not, the water will be slowly (or quickly) going down. Sometimes I just apply a little vaseline around the rubber on the seal and it makes it work again. But other times, the seal itself might need replacing.

These are all just suggestions - and like Mrsissy says - check that the fittings are tight.

Vickie, it is funny you should mention the sink because when I run a lot of water through the toilet, like when I dump and and want enough water in it to help with the next dump, the sink gurgles. Is this normal?

Unfortunately, Beth and Mrssissy, the seal is covered by this cheap plastic ring that includes the flushing mechanism and I cannot see the seal or even if there are any bolts to tighten. I will have to ask Fleetwood about it.

If you are getting gurgling in the sink, your roof top vent may be plugged, like Beth said. That air that is escaping through the sink is also bringing the smell from your tank. I'd have it checked for sure.

The plastic shroud around the bottom of the toilet pops off pretty easy if you want to check the bolts or maybe have your son check it if you are still having leaks and want to delay taking it to the repair shop. I wouldn't want to have much of a leak there for any amount of time, could cause the flooring/underfloor to rot or grow mold.
