May be fostering two dogs ...

Postby Getupngo » Sat Mar 24, 2012 12:36 am

Ever since Kiwi has been gone, I have friends who have been encouraging me to fill her absence short-term by fostering dogs until they can find permanent homes

Well, a few days ago there was a murder-suicide that left two dogs homeless. Here are the pooches:

Well, those of you who know me can figure why this touched my heart. They look so frightened.

So the group I'm working with, Hearts 4 Paws, is going to see if the shelter will release them to me on Monday so these traumatized pooches can be together at least for a while longer while we try to place them in good homes.

One looks like a beagle and the other looks to me like a pointer-type dog. What do you think?

I say if you were moved to consider it, you should do it! They need some stability in their lives right now. It could be healing for you as well. You have my blessing! :D

I hope you are able to foster these two dogs. When the government gets involved you never know what they will do.

Will the place you are working with evaluate the dogs and let you know if they are used to being inside dogs, are they housebroken, friendly etc. I think it is a wonderful idea but you do need to know what to expect to evaluate if you will be able to transition them.

As someone who used to foster dogs - I say, please, go for it. But be careful - it's awfully hard to let them go.

I hope if the dogs have been together a long time, they try to find a family to take both of them. They've had enough trauma. Of course, fostering them, you'll see how close they are. If something had happened to me when I had Moxie and Tips - and they had been separated, I don't know if Tips would have made it. When my ex and I separated, he tried taking Tips and it didn't work - he lost 10 pounds in no time at all. As much as he loved me, and loved my ex - his heart belonged to Moxie. When she died, I had a heck of a time with him - and it was only the adoption of Peaches that I think gave him a few more months.

I think it's great that you would consider doing this - for both you and the dogs.

Yes, I already have decided to do it, if animal control releases the dogs to Hearts 4 Paws.

Thanks for all your good wishes. The dogs had been living in the home of a mother and daughter who were very isolated and clearly not mentally well. It seems that mama and daughter purportedly made a suicide pact because of financial problems. Mama said she killed her daughter, but somehow "missed" killing herself and the bullet grazed her head. She claims her 18-year-old daughter wanted to die.

Phhhhtthhhtt! I don't believe a word. She tried to shoot herself in the head and MISSED? I think she killed her daughter and then had to come up with a plausible story with the daughter as a consenting participant.

The dogs may have witnessed all of this. So I don't know what I'd be getting myself into. They could have been traumatized even before this event. Pretty unstable people.

I wish you all the best in fostering these two. You are very courageous to take this on.

Well, as it turns out another rescue group got in line before we did. So I am still dogless, and that is fine for me right now. There was an emotional pull for me with those two ... but I don't feel desperate to have responsibility for another dog right now.

Those of you who have followed the Saga of Kiwi know that keeping her eating and alive pretty much consumed my life the last two years. And caring for my elderly Bandit dog preceded that.

Maybe I have a little empty nest syndrome, but it's time for me right now. I don't want to care for anything or anyone but me right now.
