Ah, Lenora, I agree with a lot of that. But ... not sure he'd agree with what mine ate - as farmers, they had big fried meals. Lots of eggs and bacon for breakfast, or sometimes ham instead of bacon. Lunch was their dinner - big meal, typical one would be fried chicken, mashed potatoes, vegies and bread. Dinner (supper to them) was light. They all smoked - but one cigarette after lunch before returning to work, then one or two after supper. None were overweight, all were healthy - lived into 90's most of them. No heart trouble, etc. What we can eat is very relative to what activity we have, also.

I have a friend who runs several miles a day. She loves sweets. She's in great shape, no problems with all the sweets she eats - which is the opposite of the rest of her family - but probably because of the amount of exercise she gets. Now, why don't I like exercise? I try to get a lot of walking in, but I know I need more - and am going to start using my jump rope more - maybe take it with me on walks and when Peaches explores, I can jump rope a bit?

I think the answer Beth is that food was real back then and hadn't been altered and filled with preservatives. It wasn't shipped long distances and the seeds weren't treated with GMOs like what we eat today. Ditto with the cigs now they are filled with chemicals to make them burn longer, and all sorts of things besides plain old tobacco.

Lenora, you are so right. Almost everything they ate came off their own farm and they then made it- from milk to cheese to meat to vegies and potatoes, etc. Bread was homemade from scratch (not using a bread machine and pacakges). But their cholesterol, etc didn't go up because of the exercise. And, yes, their cigarettes were rolled each time they had one. I still say we can eat just about anything if we do it in moderation and pay attention to the exercise we're getting also. We can't eat what they did or the quantities they did then as very few people (including today's farmers) work in the fashion they did then. When my Mom moved to the city, she didn't have the chores to go with working and had to change her diet, at least quantities - but she was a vegie lover, and that and popcorn were our main snacks as kids. We didn't have dessert - so what happened to me? I love sweets now. Still do love my vegies tho - last night's dinner the main course was asparagus and cheese and crackers were an added filler - just a couple of them. And I'm learning to use my yogurts often as my desserts now - or my mid-day treats.

We all knew who she was answering, but we just let her live in her own little world! She seems to like it there...
