Announcements from both PD and Sheriff departments, as well as city websites and city newsletters. If there had truly been an issue, those cars you saw would have has lights on, officers outside store, possibly even crime tape! They would have made it obvious you could not enter the store! No way would you have been allowed inside if there was a problem!

You know, I agree with Barbie, I do think a sign would have been helpful.
I think had I seen all of the commotion driving into the parking lot, I would have just left.
For myself, although I do "pay attention" to local events, I don't have access to any local tv stations.
I live in an area where I can't get over-the-air television reception (my house sits behind a 2-story building that blocks all over-the-air television reception). Since I am not willing to pay $100/mo. +/- to cable or satellite for television reception, I watch all of my television via internet stream via my Comcast connection. Mostly YouTube videos about homesteading (gardening, farming, livestocking), which I find entertaining, probably because it is something that I used to do in my previous life.
I have been banned from Facebook for reasons I have never been able to discover, I don't do Twitter or Nextdoor. As far as I know, my local law enforcement (such as it is) doesn't make announcements, nor am I a regular visitor to local law enforcement websites.
As for crime tape and such - whenever there is any kind of "incident" with lots of police cars and flashing lights, I practice avoidance. I don't try to get close enough to see if there is any yellow crime tape flapping around or not.
But that's just me, I guess.
I know a lot of people will run towards such things to "see what is happening". I'm just the opposite - I turn and run the opposite direction.
When I got to work this morning, there were about 8 squad cars in front of Walmart with their lights flashing! My first thought was a shooting or something! I saw people going in to the store tho so I cautiously went in. Turns out it was a Christmas thing with the police department and they were handing out gifts to the kids there and Santa was there too.
A lot of other people were thinking the same thing as me tho. Now days, you just never know!
Barbie, had I been you driving into the Walmart parking lot, I would have turned around and left without investigating any further.
Definitely, as you say, "Now days, you just never know!"
I have not failed to miss the fact that there have been several shootings at various Walmarts across the country over the last several weeks. (Google search "Walmart shootings" there have been quite a few of them)
