My friend Robi maintains this web site, but if you do a search you can find more info.

http://www.slab-city.com/

LOW's has an area there that most of them camp in and that's where I usually go. I will probably be there in Jan sometime for a few days.

OK, I give up. What are the "slabs"? What are they slabs of? And why are they so scary to camp in? .

I had the same question. Google lead me to an Expedia description : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slab_City

P.S. I didn't see Sharon's post until after I did my google search. Here link is really interesting. I could see why some would be scared. I think I would feel better if I went the first time with some friends.

I love the Slabs. I also got to meet and talk for quite a bit with Leonard. Amazing man. I do hope those continuing Salvation Mountain in his honor do so "in his honor". But it will not be the same without him there ... just won't. Of course, for those who go now, and never met him, they won't feel that.

And yes, people either love or hate it there. Judy, it's boondocking near Niland, CA - no water, no dump, no sewer, no electric, no trash pick-up, etc - so come in prepared. The Slabs are what remain from the abandoned World War II Marine barracks of Camp Dunlap, thus the name. Some people live there year round ... others snowbird there for the season. You do get some real characters there - but I have never had a problem with any of them (guess I'm somewhat of a character myself :) )

Some of the sites make you wonder, but I enjoyed it there! LeRoy was with me and we took the RZR for a ride through the area. With his back to us and down a 'driveway', I did see one man relieve himself. We were a ways from there near Donna (ryegal) and the LOWS where all was calm. Had to see it after hearing about it. Wouldn't hesitate to go back.

It's way past morning. Carolyn and I are at an RVW rally in Biloxi. We started out yesterday. Carolyn was about an hour and a half ahead of me and had a blow out on her trailer on the Mississippi River bridge in Baton Rouge. By the time I caught up with her the road service had her back on the road. She decided to change her tires on the trailer so we found a place in Baton Rouge.

The rain front that had all the rain in Texas and Louisiana came through last night. It came through here fast with not much rain at all. The weather was nice today and now it's cooling off. I think it's suppose to get down to 50 tonight.

Sharon, what's wrong with these kids? My grandson will have nothing to do with a boat at all. When my brothers and I were kids you couldn' t have kept us out of one. It took us 2 summers to get him to ride a 4-wheeler with one of us. I don't know if that's one of his mother's things. She has him scared to death of anamials. She's even afraid of squirrls.

I don't know Martha....my grands all ride quads, sand cars, sideXside's, SUP, wave riders..you name it, they do it. But they've been doing it since they were born..maybe that's why. None of them water ski, but none of us has a boat right now. My kids grew up at the river ski'ing and out in the desert riding on stuff. I don't think any of them have been kayaking, maybe that's why she declined, but I noticed when she brought her stuff in she had her life jacket, so maybe she changed her mind.
