I love the Slabs. I also got to meet and talk for quite a bit with Leonard. Amazing man. I do hope those continuing Salvation Mountain in his honor do so "in his honor". But it will not be the same without him there ... just won't. Of course, for those who go now, and never met him, they won't feel that.
And yes, people either love or hate it there. Judy, it's boondocking near Niland, CA - no water, no dump, no sewer, no electric, no trash pick-up, etc - so come in prepared. The Slabs are what remain from the abandoned World War II Marine barracks of Camp Dunlap, thus the name. Some people live there year round ... others snowbird there for the season. You do get some real characters there - but I have never had a problem with any of them (guess I'm somewhat of a character myself
