The online library books are great and can be renewed online. I also request interlibrary loans when they do not have the book I want.
Perhaps a sales rep at Barnes and Noble will agree to download purchased books into your account for you. Might be worth a brief phone call to discuss since you are experiencing technical difficulties.
Some libraries allow non residents to purchase membership for a reasonable fee -- $25 to $50 a year. Sounds high, but it is a lot cheaper than buying all your books. This might be an option for the Canadian option if they winter anywhere in the U.S. for a while.
