Texas travel ideas

Hey ladies, we're thinking about plans for this year's vacation trip and thinking about doing things around Texas, kinda a get out of Louisiana, but not too far. Ronnie has been wanting to go to the restaurant The Salt Lick in Driftwood (http://www.saltlickbbq.com/) for years, after seeing it so much on The Food Network. Another stop will be in Bowie, TX to visit friends there. We're probably going to stay in Central and North Texas, since I lived and traveled much of South TX. So I'm looking for ideas of places to go, keeping in mind that it must be wheelchair accessible. We've been to The Texas Ranger Museum already, but enjoy western history type things, scenic areas, that type of thing. Any suggestions?

Okay, Vickie, check out Fredericksburg as it is a nice vacation area and it is close to the Johnson city/ranch/park and not too far from Saltlick. Expect to take food home from salt lick and order accordingly. It is a BYOB place, but does have a winery on the premises.

You are familiar with Victoria, one of my favorite towns to visit and sightsee at the old, old (for Texas) buildings.

North and West of Victoria is the town of Shiner. That's where they make Shiner Bock, Blonde, etc. beer and it is a great tour. You get samples for a dollar (can't remember if it was 4 or 6).

Due North of Victoria on hwy 77, then 10 or 15 miles east on hwy 90 is the town of Brenham. Blue Bell Ice Cream is made there and you can get a tour and a sample. Good stuff that is, cures all of what may ail you.

Western stuff has to include the town of Lukenback. Just a store in the middle of the road, but Waylon and Willie may show up...never know who will be coming by.

I am not that familiar with the Austin scene but maybe Diana can chime in with stuff to see and do in that City.

Ft. Worth...downtown cowtown on Friday or Saturday night can be entertaining. Been along time since I have been there so try the Chamber of Commerce.

For campgrounds, stop at the Texas visitors center, or order the Texas Association of Campground Owners book (TACO). It is free and offer your 10% off the campgrounds listed. Lots of nice campgrounds. Of course, if you are a Passport member, you get more off than the TACO if the cg is a Passport cg.

Good luck on choosing your locations and I know you will have a great time. Looking forward to seeing what you are gonna do.

Thanks for the ideas, Birdie. I had forgotten about the tours at Shiner and Brenham, just might do that! We're not "into" the big cities, nor nightlife, so we'll skip that, plus big crowds gives Ronnie the heebie jeebies. We once made the mistake of going to the grand opening at Bass Pro shop at the Katy TX mall, I thought he was going to pass out! I have the TACO book, ordered it when somebody mentioned it on here. Thanks again!

F'burg also has the Pacific Rim WWII Museum. It's in conjunction with the Nimitz Museum and pretty interesting. Also in the spring time, Wildseed Farms is outside of F'Burg. LBJ SP with his home is outside of F'burg about 20 minutes. It has a nice recreation of a farm as well.

F'burg - Fredericksburg. Lady Bird City Park is a nice park to camp in there as well.

Grapevine has a cute downtown area - near Ft. Worth.

I can give you lots of information of the Houston/Galveston area, but that may be too crowded for DH.

I will second Brenham and the Blue Bell tour - you get samples at the end of the tour.

Would love for you and Ronnie to come to TX! You too Mitch! Driftwood is one of my fav BBQ spots right after Coopers in Llano Whenever you come, we'll make a gtg out of it! Just let us know when!

Remember Vickie, by the time you drive to F'burg from your place, it is about the same as driving to the Florida panhandle. We are BIG here. Well the state is and we do have some BIG folks, too.

I'm with Sprinter, if you get to F'burg we'll make a GTG. Kerrville is near F'burg and there is the Western Museum here.

Thanks for all the ideas! I'm thinking we may have to spend a week in the Kerrville, Fredricksburg area, we really like that area and there's lots to see, especially all the Forum Sistah's! Maggie, we'll pass on the Houston/Galveston area, we live so close it's only a day or weekend trip and we've both done lots there. Keep the ideas coming!

The LBJ homestead/Ranch is pretty cool too. and there is a self guided driving tour available free at the visitor center. There is an excellent COE cg in Waco which is also home of the DR. Pepper museum, quirky but interesting and only takes an hour or so. Texas statehouse in Austin is very cool and offer free tours.There is also a neat museum downtown, I think it's natural history, that has lots of Texas historical stuff.

Thanks Kellie! That reminded me, when I took my nieces to Schlitterbaun, years ago, we went to a drive through animal/wildlife park, anybody know the name of that or if it's still there? We also had been to Natural Bridge Caverns, so it might have been around there.
