Arrived in Q

Postby snowball » Tue Dec 06, 2011 12:14 pm

I posted something similar to this last night but for some reason it didn't post perhaps as I look at the subject line I might not have filled that in: We finally left Los Vegas well maybe you didn't know we had left Salt Lake City finally DH was feeling up to driving so we left SLC last Tuesday got to Mesquite NV that night stayed at the casino as its almost cheaper than finding a campground and yes I know we could stay at a walmart but I understand you really shouldn't put out the slides when you do that so you can't run the furnace and then it's very cold so we opted for the comfort of a room...then on to Vegas have a sister that lives there so the plan was to stay for a day maybe two and visit with her pulled into the campground it's really not bad campground called the Hitching Post on Los Vegas BLVD near Nellis Air Force Base and that is one of the dislikes with it the planes over head....but at the same time so great full for the military! for the sacrifices that they and their families make! so anyway my husband hasn't been feeling well and was tired then the winds hit and then Sat we thought that we would leave but when he woke up said he didn't feel well so paid for a couple more days (we try really hard not to travel on Sundays) so got up today even though the forecast was wind we hooked up and left he was feeling well got to Quartzsite late afternoon and pulled into our site was trying to figure out what would be the best way to position it and DH realized that the batteries were low like in the red so we thought why?? oops left the refreg and hot water on electric and the inverter was on to run the power on the fish tank...so we thought hmmm no power who knows about the genny and it's almost 4:00 will be dark in an hour and he is very tired..so into town we went pulled into one of the campgrounds and hooked up for the night only 28 and some change not bad cheapest we've paid in awhile

So here we are in Q for the next few months...going to boondock although not sure we will be able to do it next year as DH is getting to a stage that not sure he can do what needs to be done and found out one of the campgrounds if you 'rent' it for a year at a time is 100 a month...sure we would not be using it all that time but might give it a thought
Hope to see KD in the near future and anyone else coming this way

Sheila, you have a fish tank in your MH? How do you keep it from sloshing the water out? Glad yall made it to Quartzsite!

Yep, Vickie, she has a gorgeous fish tank! She told me how they do it, but I forgot. CRS.

Glad you finally made it, Sheila, should see you sometime in Jan, if all works according to plan. If Alice is there, tell her hi and I'll not camp on top of her this year. Tell Kerry hi for me, too. Hope Larry gets to feeling better.

Vickie when we move about I just lower the water level a couple of inches if I need to this time didn't need to need to add water to the tank actually then use a long bungee cord that makes it so it won't fall over it's a small one about 6 gals even though its small I enjoy it
Sharon I'll pass on the "hi's" Alice isn't out on the desert this year so you won't be able to sit on top of her
looking forward to seeing you

Do the fish get sea sick (or should I say "road sick"?) from being sloshed around while you are driving?

Sheila, I'm glad you got to Q - even if you still have to move into your "real" winter location. Now, here's hoping that Larry starts feeling better. And that you can enjoy this year still boondocking in your spot.

I know that Quartzsite has free or low cost camping on BLM property. Is that the only reason to go or is something else happening there besides the big RV show? Is it a free for all where you just show up and find an empty spot or do you need to make a reservation?

we stay on the long term BLM land you can stay here from 15 of Sept to 15 of April don't have to move about....cost 180 for the 'season' the short term area is free but you can only stay in one area for 14 days then have to move on...they don't take reservation if you find a spot and like it and it's not occupied you can occupy it  but remember it's all boondocking there are honey wagons and trucks that will bring out water for a price of course..but there is something to staying in the desert that you just can't find in town even with the amenities like full hook ups! so we will stay out here as long as we can convince ourselves that we really need to give up the desert!!! Did that help you at all?

Good info, Sheila, but I would love to see some pictures of your site! It sounds like such a fun place to stay for a while, and the price is so right!

Sheila - Glad you made it to Q okay, but hope Larry is feeling better soon. Say Hi to the others for me, too. Hope I can get to see everyone again this year.

JoanE - A lot of RVers head to Quartzsite in January because that is when the giant flea markets are there. The types of camping run from extremely primitive to full hookups, but let me warn anyone who thinks they can get into one of the RV parks without a reservation it will be pretty impossible. The further out of town you go, the more primitive you get, but it is free. May have to pay to park in order to visit the sales, tho. The closer to the action, the more it will cost. I go with a group of friends just about every year and we have reservations a year ahead to park across the street from one of the sales, so we can walk to everything and have full hookups. Anyone who camps should get to experience Q at least once!

And the sales at Q used to be good - but in recent years I highly recommend you compare costs/pricing before purchasing. They sell things at a higher price than you can get them even at Camping World! Like my shower head - I got it way cheaper than others got it at Q. But there are bargains to be had if that's what you're looking for. Me, I go there when that ISN'T going on. Then it's not crowded, and I like the wide open spaces.

I've found other areas in AZ I prefer, but Q gets the most people - mainly because they cater to that flea market, etc. And I'd go if in town during that time, just to see so many friends :)

Thanks for the pics (again, I guess) Sharon! I seem to recall these, but hadn't realized it was the Quartzite region, I guess. But I do remember the mountains in the background seeming so pretty and unlike the desertness I always have in my mind. It is really pretty there, and, what with water and poop-removal service, it seems as if it would be a fun winter experience some day down the line.
