Such a chicken ...

Postby Getupngo » Thu Sep 29, 2011 11:54 am

My life right now revolves around riding my bicycle (12 miles yesterday) and avoiding a conversation with my roomie.

As many of you may remember, last year I bought a condo near St. George, UT and planned to sell my Salt Lake house. I got overwhelmed and didn't do it. Part of that reluctance is that I don't want to give up having a place near my son and his family.

Enter my BIL, who owns a condo in a beautiful high-rise (for Utah) building high on the bench ... and also has a studio condo in the same complex. He told me he wants to sell the studio. It is in a secure building (with heated underground parking) on the first floor, with a patio that overlooks a beautiful garden and a view of a stunning swimming pool. Here's the deal: The HOA is $88 -- and that includes all utilities and cable. Yeah.

So if I set up a "landing place" there, my total cost would be the HOA and property taxes. That's it.

Because I'm family, BIL said he would hold onto the condo (he used it as a rental and it's unoccupied right now) until I sell the house -- and even offered to let my roomie move into it for just the HOA fee (if she wants to, to give her time to find a good place to land) until the house sells. He said I could continue to charge her the same rent and keep the balance. How generous is THAT?

So .... I need to have the conversation and I've been circling the drain. Please send me good vibes.

Sending good vibes...sounds like a good deal for you. Would you still have a location for storing your MH?

Yes, you need to take a deep breath and do what you need to do to take care of your future. Is there someone else out there making decisions for you and your best interests...or have a better idea of what that may be? Sounds as if you are providing a safety net of transition for your roomie. You might not always be able to do that in the future... :) Life comes at you so unexpectedly some times.

My son has an RV pad at his house and is happy to store it. But I may just rent a space nearby in St. George when I'm there so I don't have to drive 300 miles to load up and go. But the point for me would be that I would be able to travel a LOT more with no "home maintenance" headaches. Turn-key at both places. And I might just pare down to one "landing zone" at some point.

You're a good writer. Take what you wrote in your first post, remove those "editorial" remarks & present the facts to her in writing. Can't argue with those ...

I'm jealous. ;)

These kind of opportunities don't come along often. You are doing above and beyond for the roommate with this deal.

Well...since you asked...you need to take care of your future. No one else is gonna do it for you. Altho BIL is really helping you tons with his offer. I know from past posts that the roomie has some problems, and that we are all our brother's keeper to a certain extent, but you've already gone above and beyond with her and now I'm sending good vibes to you to make the call. Oh yeah, you didn't ask for opinions, just good vibes... :? Oh well, you know us, we give an opinion whether asked for or not.. How about a hug and a gentle push to go along with the vibes? :D

You women are so wonderful. I just went to an Al-Anon meeting, and the topic was being honest with one's self. I had to admit that I still take on too much responsibility for others. So I need to be honest with her and me. Wish me luck!

Sounds like you have lots of support. It probably won't be nearly as difficult as you think it will be. Either way, you will feel better afterward. Let us know how it goes. Sounds like a great opportunity that you can't afford to pass up! If it is meant to be, everything will work out fine for everyone involved.

What everyone else said, witih one addition: Have this conversation with yourself as though you were talking to someone else--a good friend with whom youd tell the whole truth. If you were the one giving the advice, knowing all you know right now, what would you recommend to your friend? That friend is your inner self--or some call it gut instinct! We don't listen to that self enough. Have the conversation more than once...even try writing down the pros and cons on a single sheet of paper with a line down the middle. Again, listen to that gut instinct. The answer will become clearer and clearer, my dear! And I'm adding my own good vibes to those of the rest of the gals. And wishing you lots of luck; do let us know how it goes. This sounds like an opp not to be missed!!!
