Yes, that's Joan. We'll let Liz fix the captions on her post :)

Meeting great gals and shy Steve here at LIW. Maggie is loving all the action. When we retire to our rig she collapses in sleep. Last night she was treated to Frosty Paws doggie ice cream courtesy of Dee. Last night's pot luck was delish. Amazing the foods that can be prepared in a camper! Today is sightseeing and then a real Amish family dinner at the home of someone Beth knows. This campground is fabulous. Thank you Beth for arranging this GTG.

Sure was a quiet bunch of partiers this evening. They must be having to use wheelbarrows to tote them home from the Amish meal!

Yesterday we drove around the back roads past many Amish farms,

and toured an Amish Village.

Map of the village.

We learned that the Amish use some modern conveniences and appliances using creative power sources such as propane, forced air, and solar.
Image

Traditional clothing was explained to us.

Amish children attend a one-room schoolhouse.

Inside

They are taught German. This Bible is in both English and German.

We ate lunch out at a restaurant that had Amish food.
Image

Beth is a wonderful hostess & tour guide. She will do most anything you ask.
Image

Then we went to Walmart. This WM has special parking for horse & buggies.
Image

Yesterday was our day to have dinner in an Amish home. While we were waiting to be invited inside, we toured the barn. They have a family buggy and a pony cart.

The pony that goes with the cart.

These are fainting goats. I had to google that. They are raised for meat, and they actually do faint when startled due to a genetic aberration. I didn’t startle them.
Image

This was taken after the meal. It was wonderful, and so was the family that hosted it. The children entertained us with a song. We’re ready for that wheelbarrow now, Vickie.

On the way home we enjoyed the big orange moon.

Great pictures, I've heard of fainting goats just wasn't sure what they looked like. That is sure a little pony hope he doesn't have too many kids to cart around. The schoolhouse is very pretty, everything looks so neat and clean.

In the pic of the traditional clothing, what was that hanging in the middle?

I am wondering the same thing...

I toured an amish town in southern Minnesota years ago. They don't use any modern technology, no electricity, no phones, nothing. Their lifestyle is very interesting. If you can find a book at the library on Amish life, check it out. They have some very interesting and odd traditions, but it works well for them. Their life is very simple (not easy, but simple).
I remember that incident where that man held an Amish school hostage and then killed several of the girls and then himself. The families of the girls immediately forgave him and even befriended and helped the widow of the man. What a testimony for unconditional love and forgiveness!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Thanks for the pics, Liz. We've been seeing quite a few Amish farms and watching them plow with horses. tGM won't take pics because he believes it invades their privacy, so it's nice that you've been able to go to a place where you can photograph. We could always steal yours for his blog  carold

Liz does such a great photo job for us! Yes, that was a rug beater hanging with the clothes. Picture taking of the Amish is okay as long as you don't take pictures of their faces. Rebecca, who cooked the dinner for us last night, was willing to take the photo of us. After, the children quickly gathered around to see on the camera. I respect their beliefs, but I love looking at photos of my children and grandchildren at different stages of their lives.

We got down to business today - winery with brewery, Shady Maple smorgasboard, shopping!
