Renovating tales

Postby retiredhappy » Sun Aug 07, 2011 9:17 am

I'm finally coming up for air after moving into my new place on July 15th. I've had workmen under foot almost the entire time. Fired the first one who built the fence and started on the new flooring. The fence is TERRIBLE - not at first glance but when you really look at the workmanship- nails sticking out, rails uneven, gates (both of them) wouldn't close, etc. The last two men I used were great. I got a great deal on the mobile as it had been empty for over a year; had multi-tone brown high-low carpet and even the bathrooms were carpeted in a different carpet. The woman had triple window coverings so the house was really dark. I have to say I'm really enjoying just opening the door and letting the dogs roam and since at the moment there is no grass - all rock, Sophie's allergies seem to be doing better and Buddy is getting more exercise so he's moving easier.

Carole has finished her chemo and had the surgery to remove her other ovary and uterus so will be home early September. I'm hoping we can take some kind of a trip together depending on finances. She was told she was now cancer free and they would be watching her carefully in the future. I'm seriously thinking about trading or selling my rig and getting a smaller Class B for shorter trips. I think I would do more traveling if I didn't have to drive my big rig especially if I'm alone with just the dogs.

I'll try not to bore you with my renovations - I had forgotten how much I love to renovate and decorate. I've been haunting our building material Restore. Found the solid wood cabinet for the bathroom there for only $50!!

I haven't done much outside other than get the fence built cause its been just too damn hot.

I, too, love my sink BUT it needs constant wiping to prevent water spots so I wouldn't have it if I had a husband or kids to clean up after. The advantages of being single - no one but myself (and the dogs who don't use the sink) to clean up after.

Gorgeous transformation, Karen! My mobile is very old (1969!) and looking at your pictures makes me envious. I did have aluminum awnings put outside on the front picture windows, tho. Looks great and helps keep the temperature down a bit inside. I, too, love that sink! Worth having to polish it every time you use it!

Great job. And so glad you're in your element. As to the sink. I love to look at it in someone elses home - so it's perfect in yours. I always wanted a bathroom sink I could use - with a real bowl, etc. But if I had multiple bathrooms .... It really is so gorgeous.

That was the first thing I thought of. When we built our second home I wanted colored bathroom fixtures. The bathroom with the peach color was ok, but the raspberry one showed each water spot and was a bugger to keep looking nice. (had a husband then).

Karen, the new decor is beautiful! The transformations are amazing. Great job, and you sound so happy. :D

Absolutely fantabulous! Can't wait to see it and I promise to wipe the water spots when I wash my hands!

Karen - it looks wonderful!!
I too like that sink even if it does require constant polishing.
What's next on the list? Or are you ready to just sit back and enjoy for a while?
Hope you and Carole get that trip in soon. Please tell her hello for me.

Lookin good! Doesn't it make a huge difference when you pain the dark paneling! When we bought our house it had that same paneling, but all the way up the walls, made it so much brighter when it's painted, then we flooded and replaced it with sheet rock.

Love what you have been doing. Fabulous sink. You do "sound" much happier with this new chapter of your life. Looking forward to whatever else you will be renovating. Linda
