As usual thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Monticello. I went there in 1982, on the way to DC to take my daughter to be a page for Representative Bill Alexander from Arkansas. I was so full of anxiety about leaving my daughter in that environment I could hardly enjoy the tour. I do hope to do this again someday. Thanks Liz for keeping our appetites whetted for travel

Sigh...another one on my bucket list. Great tour Liz, and the food looked yummy! A lot of my faves on the plate..beans, black eye peas, beets, slaw, cornbread...you can keep the mashed! I do so love southern cooking. So far today in my mind I've had fried oysters and now your great dinner!

Thanks for the pictures. My cousin took me to visit last fall when I stopped by to visit after wandering around and visiting a past co-worker in VA. It is amazing how far and wide Jefferson's mind worked. My cousin also said that one of the reasons that he moved so far away from Washington (for those times he was on the edge of civilization) was to cut down on the visitors that made their way to find him. Also he was often stretched to provide food, etc.....for many of those passing through. It is the everyday stuff that makes lives extra interesting....

I was a little girl when my parents took my brother and me here, and, of all the things we saw, I remember some kind of a huge clock, or swinging pendulum hanging from the round ceiling in the rotunda of the entryway that Jefferson had invented and built. Is that still there and working? I stood for along time watching that thing work. Thanks for the memories!

Thanks again Liz for educating us on Jefferson's beautiful home and gardens. Great pictures. Do you think there was an abundance of food back then like was on your plate?? LOL

Yes, the clock/calendar is still there and working. You can see some of the pendulums in the entry hall picture which I took from a postcard.

Last time I was at Monticello was in the 1960s. Looks a lot better in your photos than I remember it but well worth the time to visit in either time frame.
