Health insurance questions.

Postby bikerchic777 » Sat Jun 18, 2011 10:23 pm

Now that I have decided to continue full-timing and workamping as a career  , I have a dilemma. When I quit my full time job in 2007 to start RVing, I had to start buying individual health insurance. Last fall, I reduced my Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield plan to Blue Basic to save money. Of course, my premiums have already gone up  My income level now is below poverty level, but from what I've read, I don't qualify for medicaid. I'm not a senior, don't have kids at home, etc. Does anyone have any bright ideas for health insurance plans that would help my budget? I'm a SD resident, but need something that is honored nationwide because of my vagabond lifestyle ;) I really don't want to be without insurance, but paying the premiums when I'm between jobs is stressful for me :?

Hi Linda

I'm not sure what you are paying or what you can afford to pay, but have you tried this link to see what is available:

http://www.ehealthinsurance.com/ehi/Alliance?allid=Goo25151&mcei.app.terminalID=__tid__4_

You can sort by any number of categories, like price, deductible, etc. Hope it is helpful! :)

You didn't mention what you're paying, but the plan you have was about the lowest I discovered. Heath insurance isn't cheap. I use a very high deductible and only have very basic - it's for emergencies only. If you have no savings, etc that they can wipe out if something happens, you could go without insurance - they have to help you if something happens, and can't take money you don't have.

I know some are gasping at that thought, but it's simply the truth. If you have savings, then you could be wiped out with no insurance. It's a sad state of affairs that the insurance system in this country is such a mess (and both parties are to blame). Meantime, do NOT let BCBS of SD discover you are a fulltimer - or they'll drop you. BCBS of SD doesn't insure full time rvers. If they know you are one.

Li...I will check out the website. Thanks!

Beth...I have BCBS of Iowa. When I "moved" to SD, they said SD is in the same network so I didn't have to make any changes.

My last 3 month premium was $427.65. I'm allowed 3 doctor visits per year on my plan. I know I don't want a gap in coverage so I struggle to make the payment. I don't mean to whine. I am thankful to have it, but knew you girls are a wealth of information and I appreciate any ideas you have ;)

OK...I just checked that website and my insurance is cheaper. Don't know where else I can cut back, but I will keep thinking :?
