Corn palace

Okay ladies, I'm planning a trip for September I am calling the North Central loop. Will start here in NW Ohio and head west thru IN and IL then to Iowa, north to MN, West again to North Dakota, South to SD and Nebraska and back home. Tentative attractions I plan to visit are: state capitol and heritage carousel in Des Moines,Amana Colonies, Albert Lea Doll Museum and Mall of America, Teddy Roosevelt National Park, Wind Caves, Mt Rushmore/Badlands, Scotts Bluff, maybe Wall Drug, hastings museum of natural history and kool aid museum, the museum of prairie pioneers, Boys town, and few other sights in Omaha. Today I read something about the Corn Palace in South Dakota. It seems that maybe some of you have been there. Is it worth the trip as I believe it is somewhat out of my way. Also if you can think of another 'Must see" attractions in these areas, let me know. I will only have the MH and no toad.

We went past the Corn Palace about 20 years ago, and as best I can remember it was just an auditorium with corn cobs plastered on the outside. I think we went inside, but it was not impressive.

Do check when you go if there are actually any corn cobs on it. I remember that they take them down at one point in the year and replace them after the harvest.

Wall Drug is an experience, and I would stop, but I wouldn't drive too far out of my way. Hastings museum of natural history, kool aid museum, and the museum of prairie pioneers sound like some things I'd like to put on the list I am putting together.

I didn't know that there was a koolaide museum, where is it located at? you won't be far from Pat and I'm sure that she can guide you to other places...somewhere in SD is the Terry Redlin museum in Watertown he is or was an artist and has beautiful displays...we full time and our address is in Madison SD which has a really nice state park...while in Omaha take in the zoo it is really a nice one. and in Des Moine (where Trudy lives) is a botanical gardens that is really nice...also in a area on the Missouri river is a state park called Wilson's Island it's on the west side of the river but in IA near interstate
680 and interstate 29 it's nice and not far from there is a museum of a ship that went down in the river many years ago and not long ago was found in a farmers field...if I'm remembering the right ship or boat which ever...was interesting to go through so much survived

I went to the Corn Palace many years ago and it had caught on fire so a lot of it was blackened I don't remember it as anything too fantastic. The badlands, however, are well worth the trip, as well as Mt. Rushmore. I am from IA and the capitol is one of the nicest in the country. I love the Amana Colonies, too! I like to eat at the Ox Yoke Inn and look at the shops with the cool furniture, rugs, baskets, etc. Pella is a cute town if you like windmills and Dutch heritage. If you go there, you have to visit Jarsma Bakery and have a Dutch Letter. Yes, they make Pella windows there It is also the home of Central College. My brother is hooked on Pella Bologna from the meat store in town. I will be going through IA and NE in early Oct. If you are still on your adventure, maybe we can gtg!

OF COURSE YOU WANT TO SEE THE CORN PALACE! It's only 55 miles from me. What do you want to know about South Daktota? I have a FREE camping spot.

I had forgotten about the Badlands. They really are worth seeing, but be aware that it may be hot and windy. Still worth seeing. Scenery is very rugged and dry, with no trees or vegetation of any sort. It is a national park and I looked it up--has camping with electric only.

Harold Warp's Pioneer museum in Minden, Nebraska. We stopped there years ago thinking we would just pop in, do a quick look see and be on our way....Bad thinking! We ended up staying the rest of that day, spent the nite in their campground and most of the next day. If you like museums, this is one not to be missed!

If I was going through that area, I'd certainly plan on driving through it. The Dakota's are two states I've never
been in.

The Badlands is worth seeing - it's just different. Of course, you can't miss Mt. Rushmore!! Wall Drug on the other hand is just a rather large store with lots of stuff. But, they get you with those signs along the highways. LOL Enjoy

I am in IL and if you are coming through near me I would love a gtg. Pere Marquette State Park is not far from us either. It does sound like a wonderful trip and I hope someday we can retire and have enough $ to do some of the same.
