Today started out with a small adventure but turned into a large adventure!

After spending the afternoon exploring Perris Lake State Park, I was on my way home and came to a busy intersection where I saw a little dog wandering in between the cars. :o I pulled over and ran out to try to chase it off the road. Ended up just chasing him around the cars! Finally he crossed the road but started back out again so I pulled over again and tried to catch him. He would have none of that. I had a leftover steak fajita with me (just having left Taco Bell) so I offered that to him and tried to lure him into my car with it. He scarfed down the fajita (and almost my fingers too!) but wouldn't go near the car. Every time I tried to get back in my car to leave, he started heading for the busy street again. Several cars stopped to see if they could help but no one else could catch him either. One hispanic guy stayed with me and offered a bottle of water for the dog he had in his car. He was very helpful but didn't speak a word of English. The dog drank the water from my cupped hand so I just started petting him. The man finally left and a cop pulled up. I told her what the deal was and she just said to call 911, so I did. They transferred me to the sheriffs office. They said they would send a car out. In the meantime, I was trying to build up trust with the dog which after about an hour, finally happened and I was able to pick him up and put him in my car. I called 911 back and told them I got the dog but needed to know of a shelter to take him in the area. They gave me a number to call. Called them (animal control) and they said there was nothing they could do to help me until Monday.

So now I have a dog...until Monday. I am calling him Perris. I am not sure what kind he is. He is about 20 pounds and looks part chihuahua with his face, legs and tail, but much bigger than your average chihuahua (almost beagle size), and is black with brown points (rotweiler markings). Can't even tell if he is a puppy or not but seems pretty young. He has a collar on but no tags. Doesn't look like he has been out on his own for very long, probably just today. I am hoping he is well house-broken!

He is very friendly now. I took him for a walk when I got home and he is sleeping in Lola's bed (she hasn't used it anyways).

I will post a photo soon so you can tell me what breed he may be.

While I was trying to lure him to my car, I heard horns honking and looked up to see a pitbull running between the cars in the intersection. He had a broken rope tied to him. Not much I could do, but he ended up going down a side street and disappearing somewhere. There is a walled-off neighborhood near the intersection that both dogs probably came from. I may go back there Monday morning to see if there are any "Lost Dog" posters up by then. If not, I will take him to the animal shelter down the street from me (apparently, it is the closest one to where I found him). I did post a "found dog" report on their website.

looks just like my daughters dog, which is a minpin/chi mix. Some minpins can get a little on the large side, those that tend to be
of questionable descent :D cute little dog though.

What a cutie. I hope he finds his home (and that it's a good one). Nice of you to do so much for him.

Be careful - rescuing Sophie is how I ended up with three dogs in my bed. I have slightly more room since I lost Sassy but not much and Sophie sleeps glued to me.

wondering how you faired through the night with your house guest, just think, you could have a little hiking partner.
The pictures also make the little guy look a tad long, so could have some dachsund in there too.

Cutie Patootie! Looks like a friend's dog who is part Chihuahua and part German Shepard (don't even try to image how that happened). And I agree, if Sophie is tolerating that cutie, you just might have met the perfect hiking partner. :D You are so my heroine for staying there to get him...a woman after my own heart!

He is adorable. If his hoomans are not searching for him, could be a good hiking companion.

OMG...somebody had to stoop pretty low!

He is a cutie and the collar indicates that he does have owners....hope that he can find his hoomans. As nice as it would be if you could keep him, he would surely hurt your possiblities of finding another rental.

How would you check to see if he has an implant chip thing?
Do you have to take him to a vet?

As sweet as he is, no I am not going to keep him. Just can't afford a dog right now.

He was good thru the night, altho I was awakened at 4am for a pottie break! And he doesn't just "go" anywhere. He has to check out every bush, etc for ever before going! I work 8 hours today so I hope he has a strong bladder! He did whine by my bedroom door after we got back from the walk, but settled down after awhile. Luckily, he is not a barker!

No, Lola is NOT a happy cat right now. I have her locked up in my bedroom for now.

I will bring him to the shelter down the road to see if he has a chip. Then I plan to drive back to the area where I found him and see if there are any LOST DOG signs posted around there. If I don't have luck there, I will bring him back to the shelter and leave him there.

He started scratching a lot this morning, so I put some flea stuff on him that I had for Lola, just in case.

He's a cutie. Probably has some Dachsund with that long body and short legs. (No Mitch jokes here) Has the same long body as my Trent and coloring as well.

Barbie, as long as you are going to the shelter to have him checked for a chip, why not just leave him there then. I think it will be less traumatic for him then bringing him back later. You can then go the the neighborhood you found him and see if there are any lost dog posters. If so, call the people and tell them where the dog is. Just an idea. Linda

Barbie - You are so nice for taking of this adorable pooch. Hope he finds his home soon. Agree with Ava - looks like he has some Doxie in him. My daughter was always stopping for dogs running loose on roadways. She was lucky to usually find their homes. And, yes, she has kept at least one. LOL
