Sunburn Peeling Blues

Several Days ago I took the maiden voyage in my Advanced Elements (same kayak as BirdbyBird's). That was on one of the only 70 degree sunny days here...thus the desire to take the kayak out. But, In my old age I just don't think as clearly as I used to and with just a tank top on I didn't even consider that fact that my "maiden winter skin" was getting burned to a crisp. So, I have been peeling like crazy ever since...

Earlier I had written a post about how I was trying to keep from peeling all over in my small Trailer space...but I decided to delete that story cuz it was just too silly to tell you of such a dumb situation. Suffice it to say....be sure to not get sunburned this summer...I should have known better

For future reference, Aloe Vera is fantastic for burns. Slather it on right away and often and it heals the burn quickly, possibly without the blistering and peeling. I burned my fingertips really bad on a flat iron once, and got the Aloe with pain meds in it. Put that on each fingertip and put bandaides around each one. Two days later, I took off the bandaides, and you couldn't even tell there were any burns. No blisters, nothing. I was very impressed!

Sunscreen is the better option, of course...

I have used aloe vera for years to put on after sunbathing...but this was way more than aloe vera could handle...I should never have let myself get that burned, should have gone to the hospital or a clinic but decided not to.

I use Vitamin E straight from the capsules. I was sitting under a beach umbrella, enjoying the beach, and naturally fell asleep. My legs were the only part of me that was in the sun and naturally they burned. At home I opened the E capsules and poured it straight on the burn. Healed quickly. My father was burned badly on his leg when the handle of the coffee pot broke and the hot coffee spilled on his thigh. My father only drank instant coffee because the drip coffee was not hot enough. After he got his pants off and checked the damage, he too used the Vitamin E from the capsules. His burn didn't even blister and healed quickly as well. Good stuff that Vitamin E. Linda

Been there, done that and feel for you. It's not fun. I was almost hospitalized once for how badly I let myself get burned - and probably should have been. Oh, I feel for you. Bet the sunscreen has a place in the kayak pouch now.

Reminds me of when my oldest son was say probably 5 or 6. He can running in the house all worried because his skin was peeling off and he wanted to know "if there was another boy under there!" Wendy

Ouch! But I hope that the kayak worked well for you and that you won't be permanently scared.....literally or figuratively. Just reassure the AE that she wasn't responsible. (I have so many freckles, I was never able to track the extra skin damage from the blisters....) I do better in my older age.....

I had three hardshell kayaks, one of which I loved dearly, but had to leave it behind as there was no room for hardshell kayaks and the obvious hassle of loading/unloading from vehicle (especially as I get older)...so the AE seemed the best choice. It does track fairly well. I am not real pleased with the "side" air compartments, seems they could have made those taller to give more lift on the side. Do you think that too? I pumped them up until resistance wouldn't allow any more air. Next time I go out I am going to put some weight in the bow, see if it is less squirrely that way. I do like that it moves quickly through the water. I think my little AE and I will become good buddies.

Remember: Sunscreen, suncreen and more suncreen. Wear a hat, too!

I had noticed that the "sides" seem to ride closer to the water on some of the inflatables but part of what makes more work to paddle the Sea Eagle is that the sides are higher. For calmer lake waters and mild streams I think the AE sides will do quite well and if heading for wilder water I will use the Sea Eagle.... I do think that it gets easier to inflate with experience.
