Car/booster seats for dogs

Postby JoanE » Sun May 15, 2011 3:56 pm

Do you use one of these for your smaller pooches? Since I will be traveling alone, I could keep it permanently on the passenger seat. It seems like it would be safer while driving to have Maggie harnessed. In my car, I just hook her leash to the overhead grab bar but for extended driving I thought this might be a better solution. Good idea or waste of money?

Joan, I couldn't see any pics or links to anything specific but I have friends that us harnesses and or seat. Several ladies on here do so I am sure you will get some thumbs up. If it helps your peace of mind (and you have a dog that has a tendency to jump out before asked) I suggest you go ahead. Dogs are as much at risk as any child when they are thrown into a dash or front window. It could also prevent them from escaping from a crash and running away in fear and confusion.

I have the booster carseat for my dog. She wears a special heavy duty sheepskin padded harness when she rides in it. She loves her seat. She usually just sleeps but if I stop or slow down her head pops up to see whats going on...then right back to sleep.

I think she is "precious cargo" and needs to be confined for her safety and mine. Not everyone thinks this way on here and I feel it is a personal choice.

Karen,
She is indeed "precious cargo". What a cutie! I feel the same. I think I will get a seat for her. I'll feel better knowing she won't get under my feet or escape out the door. In my car she is a very good passenger but she is not riding for hours at a time.

Thanks for the input and photos.

This is Winnie when she was a puppy in her seat, it does have a clip to secure her but...she hates to ride so never really used it.

I can't answer your question about car seats, but wanted to say that Maggie is a really cute "terror!"

We don't have car seats for our three dachsunds but they never ride in the front seat either. Two of them prefer to sleep on the floor in the back seat of the car and one of the back seat. The same is true when we are in the F250 pulling the 5ver. They all love to travel and are absolutely great to take on trips as they sleep most of the time when we are moving and never get car sick. We stop to let them potty every 3 or 4 hours and feed them at their regular 6 pm time even if we are traveling. Never heard them ask "are we there yet even one time" :) and they are ready to go any time we will let them.

Molly has never traveled free in my truck or in any vehicle----I have her 'hut', a spacey crate with comfy cushions in it, in the back seat, wedged in there by the front seats. She not only loves it in there, but will jump in on her own if I leave the truck door open while I am packing! The confinement seems to calm her, and it certainly calms me as when I stop and open my door, (or if a passenger of mine opens a door) I never have to worry about her jumping out in anxious anticipation of a walk or fun into dangerous traffic somewhere. It has always been our routine, and it's comforting and safe for us both. She can sit up in the crae to look out when we get somewhere, but, when rolling down the road, she is a sleeper. I have to force myself to remember she is even with me. When it is time for her to get out for a walk, I tell her to STAY while I open the door and clip on her leash. I can't even begin to imagine traveling with loose dogs in my vehicle. There are too many horror stories out there of beloved pets escaping at rest stops, never to be seen again, or their bodies being found along the roadside. When my friend traveled with me with her little dog, we put another crate in the back for her, and she, too, didn't mind being in there whatsoever. To my way of thinking, confinement equals safety.

Sammie sits in the passenger seat of my RV. I have a leash tied to the seat belt that attaches to her harness. I tried one of those harnesses that are sold for dogs for safety purposes. The smallest one almost swallowed her up. There is no way she could jump out into traffic as she waits for me to unhook the leash in the seat so that I can put on her other leash. She also loves to travel but barks when a motorcycle comes up next to us. She also barks when we go into someplace with a guard house. She doesn't like anyone next to my window.

I use a dog carseat. Have one both in my car and MH. Got mine at Petco. Wouldn't travel with my dog without it.

I shop at Petco but did not see any at my local store. I'll look online. That is what I was looking for - a car seat/booster that she can be harnessed into and take naps in while I drive. I don't want her loose in the RV and she will be upset if she is put in a cage. This little gal lived her life in a cage producing puppies for 8 years.

Ok, now I think I got mine at Petsmart. It looks like this anyway.
