Honoring our Mothers

For this Mother's Day I thought maybe some other than me might want to honor your Mother's. Some of you are lucky enough to still have them in your lives - please realize what a blessing that is. For me, I lost my Mom quite awhile ago now and still miss her.



I talk to her all the time and will always miss her.

Hope some more of you share stories and/or pictures.

Don't know if my signal will work with PB, but will give it a try.....

All righty...took me awhile, but got a photo loaded to PB.....This was taken last summer just before Mom's Alzhiemer's took a turn where we had to place her where she couldn't hurt herself or anyone else.....As a child, she loved to swim and told us the story on how her brother threw her in the deep end of the pool to teach her...(he was 9 years older than she....but the sibling issue was there....after all she came along and took his place as the baby of the family...) anyways, she made sure we 6 kids all learned to swim...(some better than others....I'm one of the others...I can keep myself afloat, but no long distant swimming... )....So, about 2 years ago she had a panic attack while swimming in my sister's pool and had refused to get in after that....Well, my goal, last summer, was to get her back into that pool.....and I did....she wouldn't get her face wet, but she did walk around the pool and would float in a circle float....we had a great time....will miss this.....as I've missed her a little more each year since she was diagnosed in 2005....But, she's my MOM....and I love her.....She'll be 80 years old in July...

My mother passed away in 1967. That's a very long time ago but I think of her every time I take off to go somewhere. She is the one who presented me with the travel bug. When I was 11 years old she took me out of school in March to go on the Lurline to Hawaii for one month to visit my aunt and uncle. Then the next year we flew to Chicago. We picked up a brand new Buick at the plant in Flint, MI, then went into Canada and across to Niagara Falls, down to Virginia then across country back home to CA.

My dad died in 1945, so it was just the two of us. She was a single mom when it wasn't as popular as it is today. She always made sure we had someplace to go during my vacations. She was a very special mom and I still miss her.

Thanks, Tina....and I'm thinking I'm going red again...that really looks good on me..... By the way....Mom colored her hair red most of my life growing up....don't tell me our Moms don't influence us....

Yep, we sure do. And, Mitch I have a similar old pic of my mom and dad - going to have to upload it - love seeing yours.

Lori, you and your Mom sure do have the same smiles.

Patty, so sorry you lost your Mom so early. But great that you still have such wonderful memories. I do believe my Mom would have loved to have traveled with me by rv. In my mind she does, but in reality I think she would have been thrilled to have done this at least for vacations with me.

My Mom has been gone for a while too. She was only 68 when she died but she is definitely the one who gave me my independent streak and the travel bug. Foreign ships coming into the Great Lakes were required to have an American pilot to guide them into the ports and my Dad was one of the original American pilots so he was gone a lot during the spring, summer, and fall. Mom took my brother and I camping in travel trailers. We "boondocked" at the lake when that meant that you carried water in a bucket, used a gas lantern, and the bathroom was an outhouse in the "park". Much later, after my youngest brother came along and my other brother and I were grown up, she drove several different motorhomes around the country with my youngest brother to visit us as well as other friends and family. Dad lost his sight shortly after he retired so Mom was still the driver but they traveled anyway. Dad promoted the independence too. My mother was very afraid of the water as she couldn't swim so they both made sure we could. Then Dad bought a pontoon boat and convinced my mother that it could not possibly sink since there were 4 air chambers. When Dad was working, Mom and I carried the motor down to the boat and hooked it up and I had to run it. My husband and I took my youngest brother camping with our two kids in a pop-up campter once. We had a campfire and he griped that "Mom's idea of camping doesn't include campfires". He didn't have much to say when I asked him how many of his friends had mothers that took them around the country in a motorhome with or without a campfire. Thanks, Mom for all the great memories you gave us.

I'm one of the fortunate ones that still have a mom living and in good health. She is active and even takes care of a 3 year great granddaughter...as well as a 2nd grader for a hour or so most school days...She enjoys gardening and having family come to her house..we will be there for Mother's day. we are so grateful that she is doing so well and is so independent. She was the one that taught me to cook both in home and was my 4-H leader...and in general been there
and am so grateful that she is here

Neat thread and great pix. My mother is 92 (still has it all together), lives in her own home and I have been staying with her for the last 3 days. Know exactly where I got my independence from. I also got to spend a day with my daughter and her twin babies so it's been a very HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY for me. Happy Mother's Day to all who are mothers, grandmothers and to all those remembering their mothers!!

I don't have many happy memories about or with my mom but i do have a few...one time when I was 14 or 15 she wanted to buy a new couch. She slept on the couch a lot so when we were out looking for a new couch she would kick off her shoes and lay down on the different couches. She did this for about 3 or 4 shopping trips till she found just the right one. I was so embarrassed!!! But then when I had Jamie and was looking for a rocking chair to be able to sit, cuddle and nurse him I did the same exact thing...even nursing him in a JC Pennye's while trying to find just the perfect chair!! Funny how things as a kid don't seem so bad when you are an adult.

I know my mom loved me and we faced many trials together. I will never forget her love and care when I hurt my eye when I was 10 went through 6 eye surgeries before I was 18 and how she went without so she could pay for my first artificial eye $500 in 1974 and she had no insurance to cover it...the insurance company told her it was cosmetic..go figure!!

Anyway, she has been gone almost 6 years now. I do miss her and wish I could share about my boys, their sweethearts and their lovely children.

Thanks for this thread and helping me to remember some of the good times I had with her. She was a single mom as well, raised 3 girls on her own.

I, too, miss my mom every day. She lived with me the last few years of her life and we became great friends as well as mother and daughter. I often have a dream where she has moved into her own apartment and didn't give me her address or phone number and I am frantically trying to find her. Guess that's my dream way of saying, " I WANT MY MOMMY."

I thought I would add a few words... my experience growing up was not good... we were removed from my mother when I was 5 or 6 because of abuse and neglect... an error with the court put us back with her when I was between 8 and 9... as my dear sister said many times my mother never should have had children... what we learned from my mother made us my sister Wilma and I never let our children go hungry or cold... sad to say but I know I am not the only one so want any other dear sisters out there to know they were not alone...
One good memory when we lived in Florida she enjoyed playing spite and malice..
