Kids ... I Mean Pets! (Update)

Postby Forestgal » Wed Apr 20, 2011 2:23 pm

Well, I mentioned in the geocaching thread that I'm taking Jed to the vet after school today so I thought I'd ask for some collective mojo/good wishes/prayers here ...

Saturday night after a quiet day at home (I was away all day) Jed began to "wince" (small yelp) when he got up. I couldn't figure where he hurt after poking & prodding. He didn't do it every time, ate dinner well, pooped & peed okay, so I said a little prayer & took ourselves upstairs to bed.

Coming downstairs on Sunday he did it again, "wincing" 3-4 times as he hopped from stair to stair. He doesn't step down each stair ... he's always hopped. So I blocked off the stairs & kept him quiet all day. No walks, no visits with the neighborhood dogs. Still eating & doing his business okay, too.

No wincing all day so we went back upstairs to bed that night. He slept well so I thought we'd dodged a bullet, but going down the stairs, about 3 from the bottom I hear that wince again. So I called the vet and made an appointment for today. I didn't want to be an alarmist, and since he was eating I wasn't particularly concerned about something internally amiss.

Monday night he slept downstairs & was restricted to the downstairs area until I got home on Tuesday. Again, he seemed fine, so when I went up to change my clothes I took him with me. No problem going up, but just before the bottom he did it again, confirming for me that there's something not right.

He's been a bit subdued, but is still eating and everything else. I'm hopeful that it's just a strained something and more time off the stairs will remedy it. I sure hope it's nothing big like a slipped disc or blown knee. I think I'd know if it was big, but when Brandy hurt her back it wasn't particularly evident.

So I'm trying to stay positive and hope for the best. But we both sure would appreciate your prayers.

On the feline front, Belle's labwork came back just fine. The iodine treatment did what it was supposed to, and he thyroid is functioning just fine now. :)

Thanks everyone!

Dear Jed,

You are very lucky to have such a concerned and observant Mom.
I know you will be okay with her loving care.
Tell your Mom to let us know what the doctor says.

Love,
Abby

Gosh, I sure hope he is OK. Maybe hip displasia? Hope not! I know dogs like Jed are suseptable to that. You sure have had bad luck with your critters lately. Your vet must love you! You probably have paid for his next vacation to Italy! :o

Oh, Jed, I hope your vet can find where it hurts and help you right away. My mom was mean to me today and took me to the vet and I got SHOTS. I don't like strangers that much (better than I used to, thought) but when they come with shots - I mean, c'mon Mom. But maybe you'll need one to feel better. All mine have done are make me tired today. Mom was nice. She's been trying to talk me into a long walk this afternoon, and I ignored her, but when she said we could go in the golf cart I got right up. She took me way to the back and let me lose (she breaks rules occasionally). I pooped and she picked it up - then I went and jumped in the mud. Serves her right. I hope Jed's pain goes right away and he can hop and jump again - there or come do it with me. Mom then took me to one of the streams and I walked myself in and cleaned myself off. She was very proud of me. I know your Mom is proud of you, too. I'll be watching to see that your vet did good by you. Good luck.

Hi Jed,
Winnie here I sure hope you are better soon, I've been to the doctor too and sure don't like all the poking and sticking. My mom says to tell your mom that she took my brother Charley to the vet when his back hurt and she gave him some pills but she also did something chiropractors do and manipulated something into place along his spine and he felt much better. I hope you are better soon and we are sending you and your mom big hugs!!
Your friend,
Winnie

Hi Jed, so sorry you have an owie (that's what mom calls it). I had one once when I bailed off mom's lap to chase Sam the cat. Hopefully it's nothing that's gonna get you a shot. Let us know what the doc says. Is he taking you to Italy with him? Maybe he'll let your mom come, too! Errrrrrrs, Chewy

Hi Jed, hope you're feeling better after your visit to the vet today. Ask your mom to check in and let us know what she found out. My mom said a prayer for you. I had a hurt knee once from jumping over stone walls chasing chipmunks. I remember how much it hurt. Maybe you'll get some extra treats if you look pitiful enough.

Jed,
We're both hoping that by now you've been to see that vet person and they got you all fixed up good as new. We really don't like going to those places either, seems they like to poke us in the hiney every year and give us shots too, golly hope you didn''t have to get any of those!

Hey all --

We're back from the vet and only $104 lighter in the pocketbook ...

The vet I travel such a long distance for poked, prodded, bent, twisted and hardly heard a peep from Jed. There seems to be more limited motion in his front left elbow and when his head was twisted far to the right he made a little yelp, but not enough to warrant major concern. Back seemed good, which made me breathe a sigh of relief. So, for now we're going to try an anti-inflammatory (Deramax) for 1-2 weeks, stay off the stairs, short walks, and no ball-chasing with Duke the Dalmation across the street. Hopefully all of these will "fix" whatever's ailing him.

So your prayers and good thoughts worked, friends. The worst-case scenario never happened and I'll be able to sleep soundly tonight, knowing that my big ol' boy-dog will probably right himself in short order.

Oh ... he's on a diet now, too. Needs to lose 7 lbs. So his scoops of food have gone from 1 cup to .75 cups 2X/day. Good thing he's not a beggar. ;)

Thanks for your support.

Good news! I think Jed would feel really better if his Momma slept down stairs with him and kept him company. :D

Jed might, but his mommy wouldn't be fit to live with tomorrow at school -- not a pretty sight in front of 31 fifth graders.

Good deal, Jed! No shot and pills..I love my pills...mom puts them in a treat, which means I get treats two times a day.

Sophie and Buddy here. We're so glad it was nothing more serious and we hope you will feel better soon. Our vet told Buddy he had to take some glucosmine every day for his hips and back. Seems to help him a lot. I'm still young so I don't have to take anything yet.
