Late Night Ambulance Run

Postby Pooker » Fri Mar 18, 2011 8:51 am

I was rudely awakened around 2:00 a.m. Wed. with severe pain low in my back and stomach. I thought "food poisoning", but after a few hours of writhing, sweating bullets, and crawling to the bathroom to throw up nothing, I realized it was probably kidneys and dialed 911.

A fire truck, 5 hunky firemen (well, they were hunky but I could have cared less at that point), 2 paramedics and an ambulance arrived within 10 minutes. Took me to the hospital where they hooked me up to every monitor in their arsenal. Yup! Kidney stones, they believe. Pain stopped after I'd been there a few hours and just before my CT scan. I was allowed to come home around 2:00 p.m. with two prescriptions.

They are guessing the stone (or stones) passed through to my bladder, but now I'm worried that the stone just moved or I have more of them, so I'm drinking a lot of water and cranberry juice and taking the antibiotics twice a day. I feel fine physically - mentally is a different story! I cancelled out of this weekend's campout with my group because even though I feel okay, the thoughts of shopping, packing, etc. put me off. Plus, rain is expected and I keep picturing me waking up screaming in the middle of the night and running through the rain to wake up one of my friends.

I'm babying myself. Yeah, I know it's an excuse. Works for me.

OUCH, Pooker! Am sure glad you went to the ER and called for help. It's so scary to feel pain like this, especially in the middle of the night when you have no clue what's causing it. Before I had my gall bladder removed, I had a couple of attacks of gall stones and thought I was dying----I can empathize with that pain. Take it easy for a while, and perhaps it was a rogue stone and you will never have another one----let's hope so!

Oh my how painful... I like Soos had such pain with gall stones... very very painful... hope if they moved into the bladder it can be broken up so you will not have a huge amount of pain when it passes... take care of yourself...

Its okay to baby yourself. I don't blame you for cancelling your campout - if it rains you won't miss much anyway.

Ouch. Hope it was the only one and you never have to go through it again. And, yes, go ahead and pamper yourself. If you don't, who will?

I experienced that once too. The pain was the most severe I had ever had. But, the kidney stones are making the pain while they pass so once it's over it is very likely the end of it. I think it's followed by a pretty good bladder infection though, since the (commonly infected) stones will bring the infection into the bladder that's why the antibiotics; be sure to take them all ....don't worry about it coming again, it's over, says I, the great and powerful OZ.

I have heard those are very painful things. Glad you are doing better and you certainly should be home right now and not out camping. Take good care.

Sorry to hear this, but very happy you are feeling much better. I would pamper myself and cancel the trip, too. Take care of yourself.

Oh Evie! a kidney stone sure isn't an excuse to baby yourself, it's a good reason! Enjoy a cozy rainy week-end at home and you'll be good to go before you know it! Take care.

When I was expecting ds I thought I was going into labor hurt so bad but it was way to early and I was so scared. They said it was probably a kidney stone
would rather have been in labor! Not fun at all so take care and don't let it immobilize you...I'd try not to worry about a second attack until or if it happens then worry
feel better ok?
