Japan earthquake and tsunami!

Postby BarbaraRose » Fri Mar 11, 2011 2:05 am

Just watching the news about the Japan earthquake tonight! 8.8 magnatude! Now the tsunami is moving up thru the farmland taking out everthing in it's path. It is amazingly horrible to watch, knowing that so many lives are being lost as I am watching this! It is amazing how powerful that wave is!

It is really terrible.
There is a tsunami watch for Hawaii and a warning for the coast of CA and OR.
I hope anyone along the coast will be alright.

I believe that is the other way around at this point, warning for Hawaii and a watch for the CA coast. Hawaii is already evacuating their coastal areas. If it hits out here (CA) it will be around 8 am tomorrow morning PS time.

It's 3 am here on west coast, couldn't sleep, turned on the tv, OMG this is horrible. Sending prayers to my friends in Hawaii. Also our sisters on OR/N CA coast. I don't have cable, ABC is only news reporting but hopefully other networks will be broadcasting soon. Again, sending prayers for all....

So incredible! Prayers for all the souls in harms way.
Oregon coast tsunami arrival 7AM.
Watching the actual tsunami pictures coming in from Japan looks like a Sci-Fi movie. Just devastating.

Thinking about all of you on the west coast. Got to be scary even if you're not in the warning/watch area there. Stay informed.

So sad - we know earthquakes and the tsunamis that follow will happen - but never want to believe it when they do. I was sitting here crying watching all the pictures. Sometimes I think we were better off even a hundred years ago when the news we got was mainly local. But then I couldn't be living this wonderful lifestyle. I haven't been able to reach my cousin this morning. He lived in Japan for many years and married a Japanese woman. They are now living in the US - but I'm hoping her family is all safe.

Those of you on the west coast - please stay away from the ocean until this all passes.

Well my Motorhome is parked right on the Humboldt Bay in Eureka in N. CA. 87 miles south of Crescent City. They have closed part of Hwy101 up there in anticipation of the Tsunami. Crescent City had a huge Tsunami years ago that caused lots of damage so I am sure they are very nervous. They have lots of Tsunami evacuation route signs that my friends find rather humorous....guess not so funny now.

I saw on the news that they had closed the Samoa bridge over to Woodley Island in Eureka. Not sure why, guess they don't want anyone to go over to the Samoa area as it is a spit right on the bay and I could see that having an issue. Most of the boats moored there might not fare as well. So far there are no issues there so guess time will tell.

I have no clue how my MH will fare as I am at my house in Ashland right now. I am going to call later and see what the situation looks like. When the tide comes in the water comes right up to the edge of the pavement of our RV Park. A bit disconcerting to say the least. But I am high and dry here at home so it will be what it will be. I don't go back to work there until Wednesday so will know later today what the situation is. I am hoping it just peters out and goes back to normal.

My RV neighbor down there just called to tell me the Fire Dept just evacuated our Park. They arent moving yet but are ready. She said several people have moved up to the Fairgrounds. All schools are closed and so is part of Hwy 101 down there. Hmmmm think my MH will float?

My daughter who lives in the SF Bay Area called me at 7:00 AM to let me know about that horrific earthquake/tsunami. Of course, I was still sleeping. I live about 5 min from the Pacific Ocean near Pismo Beach, CA. So far, all is good here. I did see on the news earlier that down in Ventura people were way out on the pier to get pix of the tsunami waves due to come in and there were even surfers in the water. Can you believe that?? It was reported that it may not be the waves themselves but what goes on with tidal surge underneath that causes damage. So far OK here. My Mh is stored on higher land.

Karen - hope all is OK with your MH

Very sad for all those people in Japan.

1030 on the west coast.......Karen, hope all is well with your MH. I've went out for a couple hours so haven't been able to catch current status of wave.

They are saying Cresent City got some damage to boats (30 damaged or sunk?). Haven't heard of any other damage.
Karen, I know you have to be wringing your hands. Hope your MH is safe as well as others in the area.

UPDATE: Just told on Fox news. In Japan: 1000 are confirmed dead, 80,000 missing so far.
Now they are dealing with keeping the nuclear plant cooling system going as pressure is building. They are going to have to release nuclear vapor to relieve pressure. :)

They are saying that the harbor in Cresent City is all but destroyed, including boats and docks by an 8 foot surge. Now the tide is coming in, so hopefully, Karen, your RV will be OK, but will at least be a very close call. Glad you are high and dry!
Ventura is the only town that has not closed their beaches or pier.

They just said that a 6.6 just hit Tokyo. Hawaii had three medium sized earthquakes overnight too, plus the tsunami. Makes me wonder if all this activity will trigger some quakes around here. All the earth's plates are connected and effect each other when they move.

They are saying that 80,000 people are missing. The death toll could be horrendous! Watching the video of the tsunami would indicate a huge loss of life if people didn't have time to evacuate. I pray they discover many miracles of survival.
