I Googled what causes the smell in memory foam and found these answers.
# Memory foam mattresses smell
"This can be true especially with a new mattress out of the bag. Visco Elastic Memory foam does have a period of off gassing. This odor in most cases dissipates quickly in usually days or weeks. Simply airing out will speed up the process. There are extreme cases where a customer’s sensitivity requires a mattress exchange. # Memory foam is flammable
It is a polyurethane product which can be flammable. Laws have been put into place requiring all USA beds, including memory foam mattresses to be resistant to open flame. Well, this is a tough one. The jury still seems to be out on this one. With the emergence of all natural and organic mattresses (competition) these issues have really been pushed to the forefront concerning products like memory foam mattresses and even other related products. It is a polyurethane foam, a synthetic petroleum based product. We will just suggest this tidbit of information, imagine the repercussions if it is found to be true. Right now there are endless uses for these materials; everything from sofa cushions to car seats. We will simply let the foam industry to defend their use of certain chemicals and how they affect the human body. There are now alternative organic and all natural mattresses on the market to choose from if you are still concerned about possible side affects from synthetic products such as memory foam."
Another site said to be sure your foam was made in the USA and not made elsewhere shipped here for assembly and then marked made in the US. Foam made here has to not contain certain things.

It was like a "Lucy Ricardo" moment when I cut open the vacuumed sealed plastic bag and the foam expanded!

Thanks so much for the warning Lenora, as I haven't opened my latex topper yet ! I bought it about a month ago, eagerly preparing for our first trip in April. Do you ladies think it will be ok to leave it as is until April ? We haven't taken possession of our TT yet and I really don't want to have to roll it back up to haul it to the trailor.

Once you expand it - it will NOT roll back up, That said - make sure to open it at least several days or a week or so in advance, in case of the smell. Mine didn't have any smell - but some do. If you open it in the rv, make sure you are prepared to leave all windows, etc open for as long as necessary if necessary.

we have a memory foam california king bed at home and mattress toppers in alfie and jennie - I don't remember a smell that bothered me but with the toppers they do have to have time - a couple of days - to expand to their full size and to smooth down (get rid of the fold lines) Now I wouldn't do without it. We have thick mattress pads over all of them so I think that helps with the feeling too hot problems some people have. Enjoy it.

Yep, my memory foam smelled bad, but the instructions included a warning about that. What surprised me was during that COLD snap we had in January in Austin, the memory foam froze as hard as a rock!!! Now, no heat in my rv, and of course, not in use at all. It just struck me funny when I went out to get a comforter and found my bed frozen solid!!!!!!

I have a Tempurpedic mattress at home & a 2" memory foam topper in my trailer. I also use the memory foam pillows -- love them! But they do get a bit hard when they get cold. It takes a couple of minutes for everything to soften up with your body heat, but the sleeping comfort far outweighs the momentary shock when your first lie down on them. I've got thick mattress pads on both, only because I feel like they're better protected that way, especially with animals sharing my bed.

Don't know if I could ever go back to a regular mattress after sleeping on that memory foam. What a difference it's made for the quality of my sleep.

I now sleep on an airbed with a memory foam pad on top. I love it! Most comfy bed I have ever had! I just melt right into it!

Does the Latex Foam need to be aired out as well? We are picking up our new TT at the dealer and staying there overnight to learn the "systems", etc. Will I be ok putting the sheets on? Anyone have experience with Latex ?

You could find that the fumes from all the "new" in the TT might be a little overwhelming. There is formaldehyde in the fabrics, the scent of glues and finishes, etc. Some people aren't bothered by them others do have reactions. You might want to open the windows, doors and vents and run a fan to circulate the air whenever you aren't occupying it if you tend to have problems. Only if you are able to keep your new toy at your house! Bet you can't wait to get it home!
